Strengths: Very nice color photo printing, supports just about every storage card out there, feeder and flatbed makes it easy to go paperless!
Weaknesses: Big, awkward, slow at scanning sometimes.
Summary: This printer is changing my life. I bought it because I had paper lying all over the house. I am using it primarily to scan all my bills and tax information onto my computer so I can go paperless. To date, it's done a great job helping out.

The scanning feature is great as far as being able to feed in multiple pages of documents, and for things that don't lend themselves well to the feeder (e.g., receipts, business cards, etc.) you can use the flatbed scanner. I scan them and immediately convert them info pdf which is a nice feature.

Printing, this printer does beautiful photo prints on photo paper. I am unable to see any digital pixelation, but I also print on high quality paper. The ink does bleed a little on regular copy paper causing some minor blurriness on the normal print setting, but it doesn't smudge.

I love the fact that I can put in my compact flash card and print directly from it. It's very convenient... the only bad things about this printer is its size and the "cheap" feel of the plastic flatbed scanning lid. It takes up my whole desk, and it's not very pretty to look at. It hasn't broken yet, but I could easily see a kid snapping off the lid by accident. If you are careful with it, it should serve you just fine though.

Good printer.

Strengths: Networking. General printing is also great.
Weaknesses: None that I have found
Summary: I wanted a printer that had a network conection but also would scan accross the network (both directions in other words). I had looked at other products but no printer near this price range would work in both directions. I also looked at the print servers (JetDirect, etc.) out there in order to connect up but they go TO the printer. If you scan you must be cabled to one PC and open the PC for file sharing, etc. in order to retrieve your scans, copies or FAX.

I can scan, send/recv FAXes, make great copies and of coarse - print - from anywhere in my house. Nice.....

Strengths: Prints great with alot of features
Weaknesses: None
Summary: Nice compact size compared to the leading brands. Same if not better features than the leading brand and at a better price. Prints great photos and regular text at a good rate of speed. Especially like the paper tray that can hold 350 sheets and also the top feed paper loader.

Strengths: Multi functions. Prints fast, Great quality and scans fast.
Weaknesses: Connecting cables is funny. Copy tray is default to tray 1. Should be tray 2, Screen is small for all of the task.
Summary: For the cost I would say this is the printer. The software is easy and all the buttons are easy to read and right to the point. This is my first brother printer and I love it already. I finally gave up on HP. This printer is built tough and seems to hold up great.

Strengths: Cheap. Compact. Very Good Quality Print, Scan, Copy, Fax Machine. Network Ready. Good Support from Brother. Overall a Good Buy for the price I paid
Weaknesses: The Printer in general doesn't feel strudy. But it you install it and leave it at one place then there should not be any issue. Need to open the printer from top to install the cable but not a biggie
Summary: Overall this is a very good printer at this price. Best part is that it is network ready. I plugged my network Cable and went through the setup guide and it installs immediately without any issue. I did call Brother to check for the Ink life (No of prints per Cartiridge) and they responded my call immediately. The printer stops if any one ink tank is empty to prevent Print Head damage but I am not concerned about it. The Ink Cartridges are very very cheap compared to the HP and Lexmark printer on the net so the ink cost is not an issue for me. Over all I am very happy with this printer.

Strengths: Fastest injet based machine I have ever owned. Easy to install and easy to use. A tremendous number of features for an all-in-one at this price. Terrific quality output. Doesn't eat ink!!!
Weaknesses: Another manufacturer who just doesn't get it!!! Include the USB cable!! Include the USB cable!!!!
Summary: I wanted a high quality all-in-one machine. After much research I settled on the Brother. I am not sorry I purchased this item. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a business based all-in-one machine where speed and quality are only surpassed by the endless number of features. Very economical ink usage!!!

2 Star Reviewmfc-5840cn all in one
Strengths: capable network connection or capable usb2 or usb1.1 connection. 2 paper trays 350sheets together. individual ink cartridges. included ink cartridges. price $145 after $30 rebate from ebuyer.com
Weaknesses: no usb or network cables included. terrible installation with the network configuration. very short power cord. mine seem to have been used.
Summary: 2006-10-31 18:44:19 I found blue ink on one of the inkhead protection cups it got all over my hand, seems this machine was either tested or used by someone.

I had to call tech support for installation.

Windows XP could not locate the machine, the installation set the private name instead of the ip address and this for some reason does not work. the port address had to be changed as well. private name BRN_677AED to ip address. the ip address was set to static on the printer. settings that were changed are found under:

control panel/scanners & cameras

control panel/printers and faxes;

and on the machine itself.

the support is terrible long wait 15minutes and

not friendly. they're quick to get you off the phone without getting all the kinks out.

I was told that the problem I experienced was pretty much normal, so expect it if you use the printer with a network cable.

I had to call twice since the first time only the scan

function part was fixed. and not the printer function

So use your better judgment.

I haven't used it long enough to provide a complete review.

I hope brother fixes these issues I mentioned.

I was told my linksys router might be the reason the

host name/private name doens't work.

I stand by my purchase though, alot for the money.

After I year of use 10/31/06. I wanted to update my review.

2 things I noticed that suck.

The ink goes fast even though I don't use the machine that often, reason for ink going fast is the machine cleans itself everyday automatically.

The other problem is everytime I turn on the machine the first page it prints is unreadable/blury/skewed text.

Don't know why; much be a defect. I tried to clean the printheads but no help. I think my warranty coverage has expired too. So I can't recommend this machine, Please buy a canon or hp or some other superior product.

1 Star ReviewI will return this product immediately. It should ...
Strengths: Packed nicely in the box
Weaknesses: Prints much slower than advertised. Print quality is sub-standard. Paper feed does not align correctly so the print is at an angle on the paper.
Summary: I will return this product immediately. It should never have made it past quality control at Brother. I hope this is not an example of the Brother quality.

I will not buy another Brother printer.

David

2 Star ReviewSupport is not good.
Strengths: The machine is very good all of the funtions are very good for the price
Weaknesses: Support fom Brother needs alot of improvement
Summary: I bought 3 of these units about 3 months ago and one started printing lines in the photos and text. Cleaning the print head works for one or two pages then back to the lines. I called support and after about 45 min. on the phone they decided to send a replacement. The next day I recieved a call from another person at Brother who wanted a fax copy of the print. I faxed it to her with the print quality page clearly showing the missing boxes in the black print. No one ever contacted me again. I finally sent and email and the responce back from that was they could not see the lines so they stopped the replacement. So I am stuck with a printer that will not print correctly after only two months of service. I guess it wasn't cheap after all. I am going to replace it with an HP.

Strengths: All round good quality
Weaknesses: Maybe a little noisy, maybe a little slow at printing
Summary: Bought the Brother MFC 5840CN recently, and I am very pleased. I have started writing reviews when i like something (as I sure as hell write 'em when i don't).

First things first. Price. I think you will struggle to get something with this much functionality , for this price. It copies, scan, faxes, prints and even has 3 slots for taking multimedia cards such as flash cards.

The only way I think you may fail to be impressed, is if you are looking for high end quality output. This is not a laserjet printer, so don't expect the quality to be top notch, and don't expect it to be fast. It's not a high end copier, so don't expect pristine copies, ditto fax, ditto scan.

But these are not criticisms of this product. Far from it. It's merely that I think people need to keep proprotionate expectations. This little bundle gives you enormous bang for your buck, and I believe it is unrealistic to expect photo quality output.

I use it for my home office and the standard is more than adequate. If you require high-end, razor sharp graphics and images , printed out at a fair lick, then this is not the hardware for you (and incidentally , I am not sure why you would buy this if those were your requirments).

If I have any gripes (and I don't really). It is a little on the noisy side and in some ways the card slots are a nice but superfluos extra (as the printing is not photo quality I would not use this for printing out my photos anyhow)...

brother I salute you.

1 Star ReviewCrap
Strengths: Cheap
Weaknesses: Flimsy, Slow, Jams Often
Summary: I am very disappointed by this printer. I found it at a bargain price and came here to check the reviews. It seemed to be mostly positive, so I bit.

I sure wish I hadn't now. The construction is very cheap. Ink Jets in general are no good for fax machines and copiers. The thing has started jamming all the time now. It looks like it's jamming because the flimsy components have a hard time staying where they're supposed to be.

I have heard very good things about Brother printers from PC Magazine, but between this one and another Brother Laser printer we have here, I'm not impressed.

Unless you have absolutely no space in your office, stay away from multifunction printers.

2 Star ReviewNO CUSTOMER SUPPORT
Strengths: PRINTER IS EXCELLENT. NICE COLORS.
Weaknesses: NO CUSTOMER SUPPORT AT ALL. NEED SOME REPLACEMENT PARTS AND NO BROTHER OFFICE CAN SELL THEM. NOZZLES WORE OUT QUICK.
Summary: IT WOULD BE GOOD THAT BROTHER GIVES CUSTOMER SUPPORT. WHERE TO BUY SPARE PARTS. INK CAN BE BOUGHT ALMOST ANYWHERE. MANY COMPANIES SELL THE INK, HOWEVER THE PARTS SHOULD BE SOLD BY BROTHER.

1 Star ReviewThis is for you if you love reinstalling drivers
Strengths: It's all-in-one, all right...
Weaknesses: - when one ink cartridge runs out, the whole system shuts down - drivers have to be completely uninstalled using an arcane undocumented process and then reinstalled about every 120 days or so.
Summary: It would be a nice product if it worked reliably - which it doesn't. The company - despite feedback requests - won't update the drivers so that they don't keep failing, and won't even modify the install process so that it uninstalls the previous drivers probably. Reinstallation even sometimes requires manual registry modification.
