Would be a nice budget ultrazoom camera, if it werent for one major flaw......
Strengths: Very good image quality, pull-up flash, 10x zoom
Weaknesses: Rather slow flash performance, Autofocus is practically useless indoors
Summary: I bought this camera hoping for a nice budget ultrazoom camera that was compact and easy enough to carry most places. I usually like Canons products, so I decided to go with the SX100 IS. This camera has very nice image quality in good light. In low light it has quite a bit of noise, but that is fairly normal for a compact. I did notice a little purple fringing, but it could have been a lot worse. Non-flash performance is pretty good. The burst speed isnt that great, but its probably all most people need. Using the camera with the flash is a different story. You can expect to wait up to 5 seconds between shots with the flash. That is rather annoying when you are trying to take shots of people. Really, the cameras main flaw is the autofocus in low light. At wide angle it focuses fairly well (maybe 2 out of 10 shots are out of focus), but go to telephoto at all, and you are looking at probably 8 out of ten shots out of focus. So, if you will be using this camera mostly outdoors and you dont mind using manual focus indoors, then maybe it would be a good choice, but otherwise I would stay away. A good alternative might be the Sony H3 (or H10). I have decided that I will be saving longer and getting a DSLR. Its worth the extra money for me, as I wont have to worry about noise in low light, autofocus in low light, or flash recycle time.
