Strengths: Good product features for the price, reasonable price on ink Weaknesses: Very prone to mechanically fail Summary: One week before my 1 year warranty expired, the unit failed. It would not print red. When I called Brother they sent me a "used" warranty replacement. I also purchased an extension for my warranty, bringing it to two years. About a month after the warranty expired the replacement unit failed. This was a error message telling me to call brother for a repair. This was a print head failure. Search the internet, there is talk of a class action suit against Brother because so many of these have failed. What really urks me is once the print head failed, the machine would become disabled, so you could not even use the scanner. Another feature I didn't like when it was working was that if you ran out of any color ink, you could no longer print. So if you ran out of yellow ink, then you could no longer print black text. Everything does a good job and it's very functionable. Weaknesses: When printing pictures or feeding envelopes the ink "bleeds" a little. Summary: I like everything about this product except the "bleeding". It's my fault for not calling the company and having the issue addressed and fixed. But b/c I don't use it often to print pictures or feed envelopes I haven't. For overall use it's great, the fax works good, scans with no problem, and print quality if good. One great thing is that the fax is always on. It knows when to pick up if a fax is coming even if the answering machine picks up. 100% of People (2/2) found this review helpful. Strengths: Superior Printing Capabilities, Very economical print cartridges with four individual cartridges 1 B/W 3 color. Weaknesses: LED Screen Small Summary: Replaced a highly recognized Brand named printer. I thought I would sacrifice color print quality, but was very surprised the Brother MFC-5100c actually printed better. Very intelligently designed software, gets around some of the quirks of my computer operating system. Though the LED Screen is small, can use the software to check the four ink cartridge levels and setup the default settings from my computer. Scanner works great, can use flatbed scanner or feed what you want to copy into a tray. Prints envelopes without the smears I got on my old printer. This machine is truly the 5 in 1 machine they advertise: Color Printer, color copier, color fax, color scanner and PC fax. Very easy and economic to use without sacrificing any quality. Integration with Paperport & Textbridge flawless. Weaknesses: ADF is fussy about having the paper absolutly straight in the hopper. LCD a little hard to read in low light. Summary: Out of the box it is a plug and play unit. You MUST follow the directions for installing the appropriate port (LPT or USB) BEFORE attaching the unit to your PC.
