Strengths: Fast warm-up, great copies, great paper handling, versatile. Fax, PC-Fax, copier, printer features are flawless
Weaknesses: Paperport is excellent scanner software (for scanning photos, etc. into a PC) however works very slow, lacks choices for sizing, color levels, dpi etc. in the version supplied.
Summary: 2003-06-04 15:13:39 I purchased the MFC-6800 after being exposed to the MFC-9700 in a small business environment. The MFC-6800 seems every bit as good as the MFC-9700 at a lower price. For small business or home use this is the machine to get. If you need more paper storage then the MFC-9700 is the better choice. My only disappointment was in the color scanner function. I have used PaperPort software before with other scanners and it is excellent, full featured software. However, when using the supplied Paperport with the MFC-6800 there were fewer choices for the type of document being scanned (i.e. usually you choose black and white line copy, B&W greyscale, color docs, color photos, photocopying, etc.) and you could select the resolution. Instead this implementation seems to be "one-type fits all". Also scanning color photos takes an enormous amount of time. I hope I simply misconfigured the scanner (I doubt it since I am quite familiar with scanners and Paperport software).

Nevertheless, this is a really great all purpose machine which is very easy to use and service. Changing toner cartridges couldn't be easier and paper handling is superb. Speed of printing pages (or copying) is reasonably fast for most purposes and print quality is very, very good.

Unless you need high performance scanning for input to a computer, this is a very cost-effective and productive machine. (Note: there are no problems scanning for faxing or copying). The color scanning is ok for light use.

Strengths: easy to change toner, quiet, flatbed works nicely
Weaknesses: needs more speed-dials that are separate from dial keys. Bigger keys would help, too. Output tray doesn't handle large jobs well.
Summary: 2003-05-27 16:14:04 My 8600 finally broke. I thought this would be a good upgrade, but it's a lightweight machine that will appeal to more casual users. That goes with ordering off the internet, I guess. I miss the front cassette loader; wheelchair users will find it hard to load the paper in the back. As noted, the keyboard is very stylish but lacks the functionality of Brother's top-end models. Serious multi-purpose users should spend $100 more and get a tougher model.
