Strengths: Strong line out (to amps),MP3 Decoder Quality excellent,24 bit burr-brown d/a, Neat looking, Just a killer Head unit!
Weaknesses: Remote too big (Compared to my previous Clarion Pro Head Unit) Cannot disable unused inputs (Line,Aux) No pause.
Summary: This thing is a killer for the money. STAY AWAY FROM THE AIWA CRAP! Worth every penny (Online purchase for $280.00) Stronger line output that my previos 4V head unit (by a longshot), It's reads MP3 cdr's plenty fast, The delay is MINOR. How I love having 85 256bit Ripped MP3's on one disk!

Well built unit, Easy install.

And, Contrary to what the book says, You CAN burn your CD's in 100% Joiliet compliant format (In a 2 tier directory structure) with long filenames and it reads them without a problem. (Just try to name your folders in 8.3 format compliance aka:"metallic.a")

You can't beat the price, This thing is pro audio caliber at an entry-level audio price, I can't say enough good stuff about it, Too bad it's been discontinued, I hope the next revision is AT LEAST as good.

JVC, You have finally made it into PRO car audio for REAL!

(JVC: "Just Very Confused", Not very confused anymore)

Strengths: 24-bit Burr Brown processor makes for very true-to-life sound reproduction. THREE sets of RCA pre-outs, including a variable subwoofer out. (Try to find this on any other MP3 deck under $300)
Weaknesses: When using an MP3 disc, random play includes ALL songs on the disc. Would be nice if you could random play within a folder.
Summary: I researched my purchase for several weeks before I bought the JVC KD-SH99. I was told to "wait for the Pioneer" before buying an MP3 receiver, but I went ahead with the JVC anyway. I'm glad I did! The JVC kicks the Pioneer's arse, unless your idea of a good receiver is one that includes a lot of "eye candy". Personally, I much prefer "ear candy", and the JVC is a veritable candy store.

The digital to analog conversion is handled by a 24-bit Burr Brown processor, something you usually find only on audiophile quality component CD players. This makes for a much more realistic and natural reproduction of sound. (Trust me, you can tell the difference between 16-bit and 24-bit just by listening.)

The MP3 functionality is excellent. All of my files played flawlessly, including several VBR (variable bit rate) files.

I would prefer a beefier remote, as I'm not a huge fan of the wafer thin "card style" remotes such as the one included with this receiver. That is a very minor gripe, and the remote is quite useful. I just like the bigger remotes with the rubber buttons, etc.

Overall, this is a great unit with all the functionality you could ask for. Compared to the other offerings out there, this one really stands out as the obvious choice.

Strengths: Great, easy to use iEQ. Motorized face plate; Easy to adjust so there is no glare. Everything is easily accessable, unlike all Alpine products. I like everything about this reciever.
Weaknesses: You will be pissed when/if its stolen. : ( I speak from experience. Mine was stolen exaclty 14 months after I purchased it. I have plans to replace it soon.
Summary: Great reciever. A must have for people who like high preformance, great looks, yet have a small budget. The feature of this reciever that attracted me was the mp3 playback. If you are not interested in this, there are other recievers out there that are cheaper. If you are going to use the mp3 playback, you will love this receiver. Its great; 250+ songs on a cd! No need for a cd case, all you need is one or two cds for a long road trip. I highly reccomend this receiver.

3 Star ReviewThis was my first Mp3 unit. It recently broke. The ...
Strengths: Plays MP3 disks no problem. looks pretty nice.
Weaknesses: Not many features, faceplate would always attach crooked. No Bass and Treble features made it sound kind of dull. BIG REMOTE
Summary: This was my first Mp3 unit. It recently broke. The spring on the front of the motorized panel broke off from removing faceplate and I sold it on EBAY.

I bought the newer JVC mp3 player model # KD-SX980 for $169.95 and I LOVE IT!!!

It has great features, a nice look, and sounds AWESOME compared to the SH-99.

Strengths: Abundant set of useful features.
Weaknesses: Only ID3 text reading
Summary: Many clever features, some of which one might not even need but still there. I'm comparing it with a leader in the market - Rockford Fosgate. RF is pomp and flashy with no substance behind. The KDSH99 beats it hands down in every aspect. I love this gadget.
