1 Star ReviewI purchased a RioVolt 90 in March 2002, which lock ...
Strengths: okay sound quality; plays mp3's and cds
Weaknesses: poorly made; poorly supported; warranty is JUNK!
Summary: I purchased a RioVolt 90 in March 2002, which locked up after a little more than a month. this was replaced with a new unit, which the power jack subsequently broke off of about 4 months later. I attempted repairs myself, but was unsucessful. I've repeatedly requested SonicBlue repair it u/ warranty, or allow me to buy the circuit board, so I can repair it myself. They refuse to repair it u/ warranty, since I attempted repairs myself. I've offered to buy the circuit board, at cost, and repair the unit myself, which they've refused. Their only resolutions were to send it in for out-of-warranty repairs for $100, or sell me a refurbished unit for $99.95, (of which none are in stock).

I only paid $99.95 for this unit new, and they are asking more than price of a new unit, to repair what is obviously a manufacturing defect!

I strongly recommend you consider whether this is a company you want to be represented by. The service is deplorable, and their "offer of assistance" is a slap in the face, to someone who could have been a good customer. I've recommended to others that they purchase this unit; however, after my recent experience with their so-called "customer service" staff, I cannot speak well of their resolution.

The products have manufacturing defects, in my opinion, that they are not willing to resolve fairly, and as such I will not be able to recommend their products. Many companies occasionaly have problems with their products that are not discovered until widespread consumer use, and they resolve them to maintain a faithful customer base - SonicBlue is not - I repeat - NOT - one of these companies.

This has also flavored my patronage of Circuit City, since they are currently selling these units: I purchased my 450 watt Alpine car stereo amp elsewhere. I have bought most of my audio and photo electronics at Circuit City, but will only shop there if the price is overwhelmingly convincing - enough so that I can replace a unit by paying full cost - because that's what I will have to do to replace this unit apparently!

Buyer beware! While the SonicBlue products seem to offer a great capability, they are JUNK and they don't stand behind their product!

Strengths: nice sound and looks good
Weaknesses: none
Summary: I bought the player about one year and I have never had a problem with it. I even dropped it a couple of times, and nothing happened to it. Some people talk about the player draning the batteries quick, but in my case, the batteries last about four to five days. I'm not lying! I recommend it!

Strengths: WMA and MP3 support, good looking, scans and plays recursive directories and no special format needed for CD's.
Weaknesses: Battery life about what you'd expect for a portable CD/MP3 player; no firmware upgrades available; no shuffle.
Summary: A nice player. Does what it says on the tin. Glad mine cost £30.00 from Ebay!

P.s. Please people, LEARN TO SPELL for pity's sake. This page is attrocious for spelling!

Strengths: Great price, solid design, great sound, hackable sp-100 upgrades make it upgradable, and many features.
Weaknesses: No Backlight, no control.
Summary: I bought this player at the price of 90 bucks (after tax and shipping), so I got a good deal, but now you can get it for even less.... the player is exactly what it is supposed to be, nothing less. It provides a great amount of quality, even if you don't get the firmware upgrade. It loads quickly, and has a great design to boot.

2 Star ReviewAt first glance, the RioVolt SP90 looks just like ...
Strengths: Excellent sound quality, good battery life, relatively well-built.
Weaknesses: Loses a lot of features in comparison to the SP100: backlit display, AC adaptor, and (my main issue with this product) firmware upgrades, plus the CD player pauses too long in between tracks.
Summary: 2001-09-30 16:03:17 At first glance, the RioVolt SP90 looks just like a RioVolt SP100, but without a remote, and with a much nicer price tag. So I purchased this product with that in mind, but upon receiving it, I realized that:

1. There is no AC adapter. I don't always run my CD player off batteries, sometimes I just like to plug it into my stereo, but the connection is proprietary, so I can't just go out and buy a cheap AC adapter, I have to go through SonicBlue.

2. There was NO back-lit display.

3. I have ALBUMS of mp3s, meaning that sometimes tracks meld into one another without pauses. The RioVolt SP90 has an INCREDIBLY long pause in between tracks under any circumstances, making my albums sound really annoying in between tracks.

4. Of course i tried remedying the above by trying to download a firmware upgrade, but lo and behold, I can't even do that!

I DO demand a lot from an mp3 player, and don't get me wrong, this is a MUCH better product compared to my 1st mp3 player, a Pine DMP-100. At least this is pretty durable and sounds good. Still, the features missing in this model are enough to make me send this thing back. Do yourself a favor and spend a bit more on an AVC Soul player, which is practically the same as the SP100 (right up to the firmware upgrades) but costs less.

Strengths: 120 seconds anti-shock memory cool design, and supports mp3 and wma
Weaknesses: none
Summary: It's great!!! I travel a lot and I was looking for something like this for a long time. Batteries last for ever, I can play MP3s and WMAs, and even better comes with a remote control. I strongly suggest anyone to purchase it.
