Strengths: It worked good, until it died in nine month.
Weaknesses: We were pleased with it.
Summary: We had the recorder 10 month it died, we sent it backed to the factory. They said it was going to be $189.00 to fix it.The warranty was for parts one year. I paid $800.00 for something that will not last a year, it was used just 3 hour a week. If I wood fix it will it last another10 mouth and cost me for labor and parts. What is this.

Strengths: Typical Tascam build quality. Nice sonics. Looks cool. Very convenient to have cassette/CD in one box. Nice dubbing features for duping quickly in either direction. Nice to have magnetic cart. input.
Weaknesses: High price. Not studio quality audio. Mechanically noisy cassette mechanism. No 3rd head for tape monitor playback. Won't record to type IV metal tape. No record/playback balance level pots.
Summary: Though on the surface it's a smart looking device, it lacks many features it should have had, (like a Marantz) by the time they got to the MK III it still is missing many features needed. It won't record in assorted modern formats like MP3 etc.Though it does a nice job of MP3 play only. Only seems to like 44.1khz and not 48khz. Hums a little in the background which shoots down their signal to noise ratio claims. Could use an "auto record level switch" Cassette mechanism sounds like a freight train over a crossing when selecting modes. Bound to give trouble soon. When you stop a cassette record session, there is a loud audio click that is also on the tape. mine seems not to pause cassette during record but works in play. Overall it sounds well but not well enough to justify the pro price of $800. Remote control is too complicated to use in a hurry and should have been RF, not i/r.

DON'T BUY IT.

I'm going back to my separate Marantz units.
