Strengths: Easy set up. Quality pieces. Great sound in a convenient entry-level package. The price is right, and continues to drop at some retailers.
Weaknesses: A lower profile center channel speaker would look better on top of my TV. I think Sony offers this in other packages (DAV-L7100 & L8100) though.
Summary: I would highly recommend this to anyone starting out on their journey to Home Theater sound. I was starting from scratch (no DVD, no receiver, not even a component CD player or speakers) so this was a logical choice. And in my somewhat small apartment, too-big sound would be a problem. This fits the bill. It's a Sony-quality product -- it sounds great with DVDs and CDs (even plays CDR and CDR/W), and with my digital cable box signal running through it it brings stereo and surround sound to TV programming. Initial set up was straightforward thanks to an included quick set-up guide. The fun was in exploring all the options available with the receiver (various sound fields, setting speaker distances/locations, etc.). Make sure you have cables to connect the TV and/or VCR to the receiver, they are not included in the package. I had to go out the next day to buy a few cables (Composite "Red/White/Yellow" connections) to complete the installation. Also note that while the DVD player has S-Video and Component Video Out capability, there is no such input on the receiver. Also beware that since the DVD player is a 5-disc changer, the unit is quite deep (Sony lists the dimensions as 17 x 3 3/4 x 15 3/4" or 430 x 94.5 x 407mm. So it's nearly 16" front-to-back). It wouldn't fit in the small cabinet I have! But again, highest mark for the quality of the product, and the new world of sound that it has opened for me.
