I bought this sub to add some bass to Yamaha's MCR ...
Strengths: Inexpensive, front mounted controls, somewhat compact size, attractive cabinet design.
Weaknesses: Although rated at 150W, the power output is weak; lack luster bass response with tinges of muddiness depending on the source.
Summary: I bought this sub to add some bass to Yamaha's MCRE500SL mini system; and for that particular application, I'd recommend it (basically adding it to any decent "audiophile" shelf system under 50W). Nevertheless, I would never use this sub with a full-sized component system, as you'd never get the bass response and power you demand out of a larger system; all this sub would do is fatten things up a bit without adding the necessary punch you need. Here you'd want to go with Velodyne's CHT series; ranging from around $300 to $500 depending on the model, these are a tad salty but you get what you pay for: high, clean power; accurate bass response and as much punch as you desire. The Yamaha is basically a cheap solution for a smaller system lacking bass and that's about it.
