Strengths: Network ready (Print & Fax), cheaper catridges
Weaknesses: Copy is not the best
Summary: 2005-08-14 19:00:21 This is a great little machine. But one thing I have found in all AIO machines in this range- the copy feature is not the best. If you have to make a copy of a thermal store receipt, you have to make some adjustm, ents and try 2-3 times to get it right. At its normal setting, receipts do not copy with all the info.

I guess you would have to go for much more expensive machines to get auto adjustments for all types of sources.

Strengths: - Easy network setup via the included software - Easy firmware upgrade for all new fixes - Can scan to any PC on your network - Any network PC can fax through it - Document feeder is a nice touch.
Weaknesses: - Wish it included a phone, be it a simple one, like other fax machines. - Startup/shutdown is slower than normal ink jet printers
Summary: I couldn't be more happy with this printer. Setting it up through my netgear router to my two PC's was extremely simple with the supplied software. It gives you enough control to not install stuff you dont' need as well (good for power users!). Instructions were very clear and setup was done in no time.

I was surprised to find out that you can print AND fax to it over the network. The printer also allows you to scan a document and "send" it to a network computer for saving/editing. very handy indeed.

I did notice the print quality improve after upgrading the firmware, so do that for sure. Definately a good buy for the price!

Strengths: 35 page ADF; network capable; sturdily built; versatile FAX functionality; PaperPort integration
Weaknesses: Falls short as a photo printer; paper holder a bit flimsy
Summary: I have done quite a bit of research before coming down on two choices: Brother MFC-5440CN and HP OfficeJet 5510. I actually went to Office Depot to do a hands-on comparison and found that the Brother MFC-5440CN met my needs better. I was looking for an AIO mostly for scanning and faxing, and MFC-5440CN is clearly the better choice with the 35 page ADF instead of the 20 page ADF that comes with the HP. As for photo printing, it's much better after all to buy a dedicated photo printer rather than an AIO. So even if the HP may print better photos, it's not an issue. I've used the Brother for over a month and a half now, and it has met my needs and expectations.

1 Star ReviewIf you have no problems
Strengths: Sturdy build. Paper feeder. Fax works with answering machine.
Weaknesses: Product support. Scanning. Very slow printing.
Summary: The product works in fax, print and copy modes. The scanner will not function. I called Brother support, went thru the drill and was told that this was being escalated to the next level and I would receive a call back the next day. After waiting at home for 2 days, I called Brother again. This time they were able to contact the next level, I went back thru the drill, added a number of new steps and was told that it would need to be escalated to level 7 (?) and I would be called back in the next 2 days. Again I waited at home for 2 days with no call back. I emailed them, received an email back promising that I would be called in the next 2 days. Again waited and no call. Another email, promised a call the same day. No call. I sent a final email stating that I would be writing this review if I received no call back. NO email or call. If you get a working product, it may be a good deal, but if you have any problems, you will receive nothing but empty promises and have a non working machine. Scanning is the function I use most often on this computer, so I have to buy another product, which will not be another Brother.

Strengths: Works with Macs and PCs. Built-in Ethernet!
Weaknesses: None
Summary: I love this unit! Though it's not really heralded, it works seamlessly with Macintosh.

I looked for a long time for other units from HP, Epson, and Lexmark but none of them offer Mac compatibility on ALL features. This unit from Brother supports ALL features for both the Mac and PC platforms. You can scan, do OCR, FAX, print, and make copies. I also love the standard built-in Ethernet port. I hooked it up to my home office network and followed the simple instructions and now I can either perform all the functions AT the unit or I can do it all remotely from my iMac. It's a great convenience to be able to be able to send a FAX from my iMac through the MFC-5440. I can scan documents and use them as a graphic or use the OCR software to pick the text off of the page and put the text into whatever program I want.

What is neat is that you can assign a PIN number to each of your computers so that when you scan a document at the MFC-5440, you can enter the PIN number of the computer you want the scanned document to go to and it will go there.

Unfortunately, I have not tried out the color printing capabilities. I have only used the black and white features. But I'm confident that it will be superb, too.

The quality of the scanner/copier is super. It's hard for me to tell the difference between the original and the copy.

Anyway, if you are looking for a multifunction unit, especially one that TOTALLY works with Macintosh, I highly recommend this unit. And the icing on the cake is the GREAT price! Kudos to you, Brother, for engineering such a great unit!!!

Strengths: Easy set-up (with newly downloaded software and drivers); Network connectability; flatbet (vs. sheet feed); good value
Weaknesses: None so far
Summary: This is a nice printer/scanner/fax.copier for the money ($90 after rebate from Staples). Is it the best all-in-one? No. But it performs very well in its price range. No complaints so far.

Strengths: Networking Capabilities, Every Multi-Function option available
Weaknesses: Scan Quality, Print Quality, Fax options
Summary: 2005-08-14 15:02:52 Great value for the price. Even though the print and scan quality are not up to par with competitors such as Canon, they are decent enough to be very usable. Only other complaint is the inability to change the fax speed. I use a VoIP line and can only send faxes @ 14.4. This fax automatically tries to use G3 (33.6) speeds and gives to option to change the default, so many faxes fail. The network capabilities on this thing are amazing. I assumed it would just function as an IP printer, but I was wrong. I uses zero-conf protocols to make printing, scanning, and PC faxing capabilities all available over the network. Essentially you can do anything via ethernet that you could via USB. Another plus is that it works with all the machines on my network. I use Win2K, WinXP, and MacOS X and it works seamlessly with all of them. I was amazed by the quality of the MacOS drivers and software.

Strengths: Inexpensive, easy to work, Does very well with cheap generic ink, Brother service resolved problems better than expected, easy to work, versatile.
Weaknesses: Make sure that you only need a medium duty machine - not for a real busy office.
Summary: My family has purchased 5 of these units for our homes and small businesses over the past year and have been very pleased with its performance. New generic cartridges from EBAY (usually $2 PER CARTRIDGE)work just fine and we have had only one problem with one of the 5 machines. Called Brother and they sent me a replacement machine with cartridges at no charge BEFORE I EVEN SENT BACK THE BROKEN ONE - WHAT SERVICE!!! I then returned the broken one to them (Brother paid the shipping both ways!!!) Performs all functions well - none spectacularly but what do you expect for $100.00 (sale price).

2 Star ReviewInk Consumption machine
Strengths: Low Price, high promises
Weaknesses: I hardly use this machine, maybe two or three pages a week tops, and it has needed new ink cartridges TWICE since I bought it a year ago or so. It doesn't seem to be able to scan, either.
Summary: I don't see any other reviews that have had the experience that I have with ink cartridges, but I am surely discouraged by the note from the person who couldn't get scanning.

I was very disappointed to learn that the places that refill cartridges won't deal with this type of cartridge, nor can you get the $3 rebate from Staples on Brother cartridges.

I am certainly never going to buy a brother machine again.
