Strengths: cool looking keyboard w/fingerprint recognition & mouse
Weaknesses: have to reprogram if website changes
Summary: Keyboard & mouse are very stylish. Main feature is fingerprint recognition. After programming with your fingerprint it does a fairly good job in logging you on to programs/web sites. But if the website you use to log on changes in anyway from the time you programmed it with your fingerprint, it will not recognize it and will prompt you to add the website for fingerprint recognition. Some of the bank/credit card site changes their site layout frequently so you have to reprogram otherwise it logs me on 99% of the time.

Strengths: great keyboard! quiet keys, lots of functions, fingerprint option is cool. ambidextrious mouse. overall good price for the features
Weaknesses: print reader sometimes doesnt catch your print. red LEDs can be annoying. mouse doesnt have 4th button. fingerprint login doesnt work in firefox.
Summary: this is a great keyboard/mouse set at a great price for what it includes. you get a nice sleek quiet keyboard with more functions and favorites and shortcut keys than you could ever need. the keyboard is wired but it also includes a wireless mouse that is ambidextrous but alas doesn't have a 4th 'back' button, which i use a lot when browsing and gaming.

the fingerprint option is really neat and really easy to set up. you can set different options for different fingers and have it log in for whatever the program will recognize as a login form/page/window/pane, which is most things.

a few problems with the fingerprint reader: obviously its not perfect and sometimes it doesn't catch your fingerprint. the reader pad thing is constantly backlit by red LEDs, and while you cant see the LEDs from straight on, you can see them rather brightly from the sides; this might be annoying at times. also with microsoft being as it is, it is designed to work with windows xp and all of Microsoft's products. this mean it doesn't work with firefox logins.

but considering what this package does have for conveniences and overall nice quality, its not a bad deal and i recommend it.

Strengths: Microsoft name says it all. Great support. Inovative product. Could not be happier with this purchase.
Weaknesses: None. Zero. Zip. Nada.
Summary: At my workplace we utilize optical recognition that scans the retina to log onto Novell workstations.

Had been investigating getting a fingerprint reader as I wanted a strong security configuration

for my home computer to compliment my Zone Alarm, Norton Anti-Virus and the hardware

firewall attached to my Motorola Surfboard cable modem.

Found a separate Fingerprint reader at a local Radio Shack for $ 49.95.

So you can only imagine how I jumped at the buying opportunity to get the:

Microsoft Optical Desktop with Fingerprint Reader - Wired Keyboard & Mouse

from www.buy.com... for $ 61.06 with free FedEx shipping and handling.

Ordered 06/18/05 – Delivered 06/27/05.

Total cost after 2 rebates – (Microsoft $ 10.00 – PriceGrabber $ 5.00) = $ 41.80.

$ 61.06 - $ 10.00 - $ 5.00 = $ 46.04 + $ 0.74 postage to acquire rebates = $ 41.80

You do the math... Can not be beat... Bill & Microsoft cronies got this one right.

The only notable problem: Limited to top score of 5 stars... Goes a 10 (+) in my book.

Thank you

Strengths: Fingerprint reader, many extra buttons, wireless mouse
Weaknesses: Wired keyboard, compatibility with non-microsoft programs, Locked Computer problems
Summary: WOW! This is an AMAZING keyboard. I would highly recommend it. You read all of these reviews of people who don't like certain features, but it all fit perfectly with my preferences. Some things to take note of:

Doesn't work with firefox. Not a problem for me, because I use IE.

The keyboard is wired. Considering how high-tech this keyboard is, I'm surprised it isn't wireless too. But since my keyboard sits under the desk, on a pull-out shelf, I don't see wires anyways. But the mouse IS wireless. That eliminated the cord running across the top of my desk.

If you are the sole user of a computer using windows XP, and you use a screensaver that is password protected, the fingerprint reader will not work. With those specific settings, the computer "locks" itself, and you MUST type in a password to unlock, rather than using fingerprint reader. A workaround is adding a dummy user account just so it doesn't lock.

But enough of the limits. I have to say, the fingerprint reader works wonderfully, and is extremely user-friendly, as well as compatible with Windows XP. It has every extra button you could ever need right on the keyboard, like opening Messenger, Email, My Documents, Claculator, and 5 customizable Favorites.

Don't like the prices you see on Pricegrabber? I found a unique combination that can bring the price down to $32. Buy it on amazon for $50, with free shipping. Through your own Amazon Associates account, plus with the Pi/2 savings on for using their search engine, save 6.5%. Then, use the Microsoft $10 rebate, and right a review of it on Pricegrabber for another $5 rebate. And there you go! $32!

Strengths: Good configuration of the keys. The touchpad works great. It was easy to setup. I love it.
Weaknesses: Need more favorites keys. LOL
Summary: I would strongly recommend this product to everyone. The ease of use is remarkable. It saves times on logging onto sites requiring usernames and passwords. This makes it so much easier to logon, then having to lookup some forgotten usernames or passwords. I keep a backup of all of my usernames and passwords. But, this makes it simpler. Buy it!

Strengths: Keyboard has nice feel. Fingerprint reader is great for logging into websites
Weaknesses: Mouse kept locking up and had to edit registry to remove some old mouse references.
Summary: I have been using this keyboard/mouse for a couple of weeks. The keyboard is very comfortable and the fingerprint reader has worked flawlessly. With 30 or so passwords it is nice to not have to type or remember them. Microsoft recommends not using the reader for sensitive/financial logins. The reader allows you to log into windows or change users also.

I have had some trouble with the mouse not functioning and having to unplug and replug the receiving unit from the USB port to get it to work again. Microsoft has a fix for this which required editing the registry and it has worked fine for a couple of days now. Would have rated 5 stars if not for the mouse problem!

Strengths: I wanted a new mouse and keyboard, and when I saw this package I was intrigued by the fingerprint reader. And skeptical too. Like the title of my review says though, it's amazing.
Weaknesses: keyboard is not wireless..
Summary: The keyboard and mouse are really nice, stylish and well constructed and if your willing to take your chances with IE, it's a buy. Otherwise, it's unfortunate that Microsoft, in their usual arrogance, neglected to provide support for third party browsers

Strengths: Great Design, awesome layout of shortcut buttons and if your a Microsoft man/women you'll totally love it.
Weaknesses: If your a Netscape or Firefox or anything besides M.S. person you won't have much interest on this product until M.S. resolves compatiblitily issues with non-M.S. products... Yeah right!!!!
Summary: Great product I have a APC biometric USB portable finger print reader and it's totally cool. Maybe the APC finger print reader will work with netscape and firefox but haven't tested it since I'm a M.S. dude. I've always had a heck of a time remembering all my passwords and this is a one stop solution. The shortcut buttons are well intergrated with everything M.S. OS's have to offer. For the price I feel this is a great buy and any tech head that sees it will have a bunch of questions for you. The only thing I wish it did have was a wireless keyboard as well since I use Media Center and I'm not happy with my Logitech wireless keyboard. But for the most part everyone's keyboard stays on the desk and the mouse is the perpherial that really needs to be wireless. (just a thought if the keyboard was wireless then that connection would have to have encryption since the finger print reader will be sending user names and passwords through the air.)

So what are you waiting for break out the credit card and give it a whirl. I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

Strengths: Great Keyboard, nice mouse, fingerprint reader is great
Weaknesses: Wired Keyboard, wish it was wireless.
Summary: I am a billing supervisor for a Medical Office and am constantly using websites to have to get correct info for billing. Currently use over 150 logins, and my fingerprint reader works on all of them.

Strengths: The ease of use and the abilities of the fingerprint reader.
Weaknesses: Had to download the updated software from Microsoft to use finger printer reader.
Summary: This keyboard is awesome, it's got the standard buttons for linking to your "My Documents, Calculator, etc.." but the real jem is the fingerprint reader, being able to log into your Windows profile with a scan of your finger priceless, also being able to log into a password protect website, equally priceless. I did however have to download IntelliPoint and IntelliType Pro 5.5 and the updated Digital Password Manager from the Microsoft website to get everything to work properly. Not that this was a great pain by any sorts. Fingerprint reader works for IE6 and IE7 Beta 3, unsure of other browsers, also if you place your finger on the pad while your wife is logged into her profile, but stepped away from the PC, it will automatically switch you over to your profile, unsure what would happen if an unrecognized print would do.

Strengths: The fingerprint reader is excellent works very well. Stops you from having to memorize many passwords.
Weaknesses: Does not work with firefox.
Summary: The fingerprint reader is very accurate. I am very impressed with it. The LED's that are always lit can be a little annoying, but not really a big deal. I highly recomend buying this keyboard. The mouse works well and tracks nicely.

Strengths: Fingerprint reader, keyboard functions, wireless multi-button mouse.
Weaknesses: Nothing
Summary: 2005-06-08 09:11:40 Great all around keyboard/mouse combo. Though the keyboard is wired that is ok...mouse is all you really need to be wireless. Works great with my system and the fingerprint reader is a nice addition (into biometrics) eventually we will all use biometrics for home computer/business authentication. Defintly would recommend to anyone that wants to pay a good price for a combo like this.

Strengths: very easy installion and very nice interface, tons of keyboard functions
Weaknesses: doesn't work with mozilla firefox
Summary: I got this product a couple of days ago and I am loving it. I followed the installation instructions and it took me less than 5 minutes to have both the mouse and the keyboard configured. the interface to add passwords is very simple. since i am a movie gore, I love those media shortcuts on the keyboard. It's also very moderately priced. The only downer is that it doesn't support mozilla firefox.
