Strengths: Good quality video, fairly small, priced right. Can capture still right off of the Tape, not good enough for printing but for the web - ideal. DV copies has no generation loss.
Weaknesses: Stills only 640 x 480, small battery (can purchase better battery), manual hard to understand, have to read it several times to figure things out.
Summary: This is a mid priced consumer DV Cam and you get features corresponding to the price (in other words, you get more features but you pay more). It comes with a USB & Video (RCA jack on one end) but Sony uses a proprietary plug on the cam (to save space since they are smaller), nice but you cannot just use any cable. No 1394 cable, luckily, that is a standard cable but they cost $25 up.

Lens is only 10X optical, but remember, very high zoom means hi cost and less quality. I am happy with the lens. I think digital zoom is almost not worth using.

I like the feature of capturing still frames right off of the tape. Plan to use it for the web since it is only 640 X 480.

Don't know why these Cams can record lo quality mpeg to memory stick. Paying for this feature seems a waste since the computer can do the conversion.

Digital editing on the computer is the only way to go. Quality stays high when making copies. Editing on the computer allows you to edit out unwanted recordings (but there is a learning curve to getting everything working on your computer).

The manual could be written much better. Obvious it is written by sombody that English is not their first language. Sometimes has to be read very carefully to understand a feature.

Strengths: Lightwight, comfortable, great LCD screen, great image quality and color, Analog to DV pass thru.
Weaknesses: ships with a rather weak battery, a bit grainy when shooting indoors, small pictures (640x480) and small Memory stick (4MB).
Summary: The image quality is very good, I have no complaints, the only small problem is that I thought it would perform better indoors. Sometimes I shoot at home (the reason I bought this camera is that I became a father 5 months ago, look at my baby at her homepage: www.danielita.com..., some videos taken with this camera will be there very soon, perhaps already there by february 15 2002), and at home the lighting is not that great. Sometimes when shooting indoors the image can look a little (just a little not much) grainy. Outdoors the camera performs exceptionally. If you visit my daugther's web page you'll see some outdoors videos too. The camera has lots of great features, but one of them made me decide for it. I have lots of analog videos, so one of the things I wanted was to convert them to DV. This camera has Analog input with pass through, this means that you can connect your VHS VCR or any other analog source and capture directly to your hard disk, edit, and output to the camera or to the VCR. This way you don't need to use a miniDV tape to convert your analog videos to digital form.

Initially I was going to buy the Sony DCR-TRV30 because it takes 1.5Mpixels pictures. But then I realized that I could buy the TRV17 with almost the same features (it's almost identical except for the Mpixels pictures and somewhat bigger lens) and a digital still camera for LESS than the cost of the TRV30. I bought a Nikon Coolpix 775. Better pictures, great video for less than the TRV30.

Strengths: Lots of features, Very Good Picture, Easy to learn. (Good menus for operating without book). Large view screen 3.5
Weaknesses: Zoom is a little touchy. Takes off if you don't have a light touch. No fire wire. This should be in the pack.
Summary: Was watching for the TRV 18 but the TRV17 has a larger screen and seems to be at least as good a camera and can be found at a good price. This camera came out at $1100-$1300 but can be found for 700 now I found mine for less on a clearence. The software is ok for starter.

Strengths: Good picture quality, nice LCD panel, tons of features
Weaknesses: No firewire cable or blank tape to start with. MGI DV software has confusing interface.
Summary: I like the camera very much. It will take some time to learn it. You would think if you spend $1000 for a camera that they would include firewire cable rather than USB, plus a tape to get started with.

Strengths: Good picture quality, compact design, easy control
Weaknesses: only 10x optical zoom, no build-in video light.
Summary: Good beginner's camcorder. Got all the functions I need. Liked the picture quality it produced. Fixes comfortably in my hand. Controls are easy to reach. Has enough manual controls to make the video look professional. Nice 3.5" LCD, although under daylight, it might not be bright enough. Lots of accessaries to choose from, buy pricy.
