Strengths: RPN (Reverse Polish Notation), long battery life
Weaknesses: Hight price and old fasion, needs to practice to remember
Summary: I am a new licensed REALTOR.
My brocker asked me to get one HP 12C calculator right after I joined his team. I wasn't sure why it's a requirement for agents in his company until I found out how powerful it was. To me, the most important benifit is the RPN, which totally educated me about how a tiny calculator can be such a monster! It's really useful just like a palm computer in your hand without the fancy screen. The oldest one in the company was made in 1981 in USA (HP 12c) with 3 tiny batteries. Compare to mine, the HP 12c Platinum, was made in 2005 in China with only one battery. You won't find any major difference between these two calculators except the old model has a golden panel.
The only function I haven't learned yet is the Programming. Maybe I'll be amazed again by it's powerful function later!

Strengths: Comprehensive finacial functions, including NPV, bond pricing, depreciation, simple statistical functions, plus keystroke programming.
Weaknesses: Complex calculator difficult for simple problems (like adding or subtracting numbers), and cumbersome for data entry.
Summary: 2006-01-25 17:52:27 When I attained my MBA in the mid-80s, the HP12c (gold) was THE standard. This calculator performed ALL the calculations demanded of us. HP has one-upped it's workhorse by increasing it's speed, the range of its calculations, and it's color. As long as you need the depth of its abilities, this is a good deal.
One of the most important aspects of the package you get with this calculator is the manual. In its 4th edition, it is well written and comprehensive. It covers all the major functions, showing specific keystroke sequences for all tasks. One-third of the manual is devoted to real life examples, again with specific sequences of keystrokes. This greatly increases the value you'll get from the calculator.
HP developed an odd form of data entry known as Reverse Polish Notation (RPN). It is the standard for this and the earlier 12c, but this calculator offers the option of using more standard algebraic data entry. The difference is that with RPN you enter a number, press ENTER, then another number, and finally the operation to be performed. In some circumstances, this makes for logically more elagent entry. More generally, RPN is counter-intuitive and hinders use of the calculator to solve simple problems. Until you know your calculator well, you'll be stumpling over this & perhaps relying on algebraic mode. The latter uses a more standard style of data entry.
The keyboard consists of 39 keys, half of which can be used to enter two types of functions (e.g. the number 0 or with another key, to calculate the statistical mean). The other half of the keys can be used to enter any of three types of functions.
This calculator allows "programming" - which means storing a sequence of keystrokes here. There is no clear amount that can be stored, but multiple programs can coexist in memory. You simply have to know how to access them.
All in all, this is a winner if you need a power hitter calculator AND can mentally manage the complex analysis that must precede using the calculator. If you need only the common add, subtract, multiply and divide features, I advise you to get a $5 special elsewhere; you'll be a lot happier.

Strengths: * Industry standard -- allowed on many financial exams
* Easy to use, tons of features, small size
* Wealth of documentation on problem solving
Weaknesses: * This model has a more durable case, I personally prefer the older, softer, standard 12C style.
Summary: Great calculator that's easy to carry with you. The new Platinum design is a great improvement over the old 12C, and well worth the investment (even for aesthetic reasons alone). The RPN/Algebraic switching is helpful, along with the increased memory for programs. Whether you're a finance student or full-time professional, you can't go wrong with the HP-12C Platinum!

Strengths: RPN and durability
Weaknesses: What weaknesses?
Summary: I have been using This calculator for years and couldn't be happier. The power of RPN is astounding. I just bought a 25th anniversery 12C for my accounting major daughter. I am sure she will love it too.

Strengths: All the features you expect plus the ability to do more programming steps.
Weaknesses: As with the original - price.
Summary: It's hard to believe the original 12C could be improved upon, but alas, HP has done it! Albeit, small improvements, HP has added the ability to program more steps (as if you need more...), a better battery and a sleek new look. Not really any reasons to dump your old 12C, unless you are like me and dropped it... and need a replacement. Anyway, this is an improved version of the already near-perfect business companion many of us have come to rely on. If you are a finance, sales, marketing or otherwise finance inclined business professional - this little gem is simply without equal!

Strengths: Lots of good functions
Weaknesses: Keys are too small
Summary: This is a sophisticated calculator that is not too easy to use for the amateur but great if you are familiar with it. It serves its purpose and provides a great wealth of information once you become accustomed to how it works.
