Strengths: HD sources are pristine - no motion artifacting.
USB photo viewer is a nice feature, and looks great.
Weaknesses: Almost 30 seconds just to turn on and show a picture. Contrast range (greyscale) for non-hd games is hard to adjust without getting blacks washed out.
Summary: Strangely, this TV takes almost 30 seconds to turn on. Once it's going - it has a beautiful HD picture. No noticable motion artifacts in high action shots, text is crisp and readable.
Minor issue with high contrast (black/white) seems like the tv couldn't decide how to de-interlace the detail - so the items (newspaper) kind of flickered. (not that noticable)
Upscaling non-hd sources was a little muddy, but still looks nice. Cable tv looks fine.
Tried it with a PS3, and some of the text (rainbow six-vegas) was washed out - I don't know if this was the PS3 scaling or the TV. Couldn't quite get the gamma down to show all the shades of grey correctly without getting washed out. Resistance - fall of man on the other hand was high-resolution goodness, and looks great.
The USB picture viewer shows pictures beautifully. The resolution is impressive.

Strengths: Can pull in digital off-air signals, 1080p great picture with built in 1080p upconversion, USB photo viewer.
Weaknesses: TV's control buttons are on side, USB port is in back of TV.
Summary: I am pleased with my new 37" JVC LT-37X688. After my old tube TV died, I needed a replacement that would fit into my entertainment center. The 37" JVC set fit perfectly. The speakers are on the bottom allowing for the 37" wide angle TV to fit inside a 37" opening. I wanted the higher definition of 1080p. Only a few 37" TV's have this capability. Not only did the JVC set have this capability, but according to the JVC web site, " The 32 bit GENESSA Image Processor w/ D.I.S.T. 1080p (Digital Image Scaling Technology) is a unique I/P scaler that upconverts all signals to display at 1080p; Model accepts 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p signals and displays at 1080p". I can use my existing progressive scan DVD player to get good pictures with this built in feature. I also live in an area that gets good TV antenna reception. The built in ATSC tuner lets me get more digital channels, (many of the major stations have a few sub channels that broadcast digitally). The digital pictures are much sharper than the analogue signals that are broadcast. Another nice feature is the USB picture viewer (port located in back is not that convenient to get to). Another minor inconvenience is that the control buttons are on the side of the TV (hard to get at in the entertainment center), but not a problem because of the well laid out remote. The start up time for the picture to display takes about 15 to 20 seconds because the energy saving feature to keep stand by power usage low. It can be adjusted to come on quicker but use more energy. Overall a great TV for the price.

Strengths: Crisp Clear picture with no motion blur or lag. Worked good with PS3, DVD, Blu-ray, older consoles, my PC with DVI to HDMI cable, and everything else I tried.
Weaknesses: The only problem I found was one stuck pixel in the corner. I hardly consider this a weakness though because this can be an issue with any LCD panel, and it doesn't bother me that much.
Summary: I've seen several people complain about slow power on speed and I don't know why. First off, is it that hard to wait 30 seconds? Also there is a option in the menu called "Quick start up" and if you turn that on it powers on in a couple seconds. The reason it isn't default is for power conservation according to the manual.

Strengths: Fantastic picture. Nice input selection. Very bright.
Weaknesses: One dead pixel. Minor intermittent screen issue.
Summary: 2008-05-31 06:17:35 Great TV out of the box. Picture is fantastic, very bright. XBOX 360 looks fantastic on it as well as World of Warcraft (WOW). Colors are true, and clarity is great if you are using a PC for text reading which is what I use it for 75% of the time. Nature documentaries look stunning. I had one intermittent problem which worried me and still does a little. After about 4 weeks, a small artifact vertical line about 4 inches in height appeared in the left part of the screen, 4 inches over 5 inches up. It did not go away until I turned the set off. It happened about three times in the next 2 weeks, but has not returned. Concerns me a bit. Will probably get the extended warranty for this reason. Have 1 active pixel which is not really noticeable unless you are 2 feet away from it viewing a non moving text screen. Remote is a little big but does not bother me. Has a great input selection in the back. The speakers that everyone complains about is ridiculous, as if you buy a $1000+ tv, don't you use 5.1 dolby digital sound systems? I would purchase this unit again, as it was a great deal for what I paid.

Strengths: 2 HDMI ports (1080p)
Clear, bright, & beautiful picture.
Weaknesses: No 1080p over Component Video cable.
Slow turn on.
Summary: If you want a media center PC, and you can't afford the expensive large LCDs, then this is the HDTV for you. I have a computer hooked up to it through HDMI port in order to play games, watch movies, and play music/podcasts. It is running at full 1920x1080 resolution, and looks great. When on the media center computer, sitting close to it shows some red speckles (pixels) around areas that transition from dark to grey colors, but this is barely noticable when sitting at the right distance. Note, this NEVER happens when using any other input source besides the computer running at 1920x1080. I also use it to browse the internet sometimes and can read text just fine. I also have the XBOX 360 on the component video port and it looks great. Unfortunately, the TV cannot display 1080p over Component Video, but not many HDTVs do support this feature. Just make sure the XBOX 360 you own has an HDMI port, then you can play at 1080p. I, unfortunately, bought one of the early XBOX 360s that didn't have HDMI. I was going to buy the Westinghouse 37" LCDTV, but I didn't want to have it shipped. I was able to get the JVC from Circuit City with a 10% AAA discount for about $950 (before tax and warranty). I wanted to be able to bring it back to a store if unhappy or defective, not have to ship it back to a warehouse.

LT37x688 Crappy TV
Strengths: Looks nice when it is working
Weaknesses: With the amount of problems this TV has you would think that the warranty lasted longer than 12 months after purchase
Summary: Worst TV ever, I have had the mother board replaced by a authorized repair center twice and it still doesn't work! Never buying JVC ever again.

Strengths: Great picture, no motion problems at all. Great colors and an awesome package....even my wife likes the way it looks. The picture and the exterior.
Weaknesses: 4 Dead pixels right out of the box.
Summary: The set is awesome. Anyone who thinks it's slow to turn on it correct but once you go thru the menu's you can turn on the "quick on" option and now it's as fast as anything else out there. 4 Dead pixels but I think JVC will fix it.

Strengths: Great picture, good constrast and brightness, true color. USB Photo Viewer is nice.
Weaknesses: 30 secconds to start up. Weak Standard Definition tuner (HD tuner is OK). No DVI nor video input for computer.
Summary: After about 30 seconds warm up, it comes up with clear, bright sharp HD picture. The regular TV station picture is not really good because of the weak tuner. All TV stations is OK if using the cable box. Have not tried to use with the computer display since no DVI-HDMI cable available. Sound is just OK. In summary, it is still a good product for the price of under $1000.
