Strengths: quality, reliability, great price.
Weaknesses: no software
Summary: NEC makes great stuff. This is a wonderful burner for a great price. I got the black one. It is reliable, priced competitively, and NEC is quality. If you're looking for a quality burner without forking over a lot of money, then go with NEC. I like this one a lot more than my Sony. I just wish it came with some software.

Strengths: Easy to install, burns DVD and CD at fastest possible speed.
Weaknesses: None so far
Summary: ND-3500A is the bast of it's class at a very affordable price. I installed and start using within 15 minutes. Connected this DVD burner as a slave to another CD burner and windows 2000 had no problem recognizing the drive, make and model. I only used DVD-R so far with very satisfactory result. I ordered this drive OEM (Just the drive, no cable, manual, driver or burning software) from ZipZoomFly.com, good vendor.

Strengths: High speed, reliable drive.
Weaknesses: Comes with Ulead instead of Nero software
Summary: The NEC ND-3500A is a top rated dual layer DVD drive. Tom's hardware reviews rates it one of the fastest drives when writing DVDs, and my experience supports that conclusion. Being a "name brand" drive, it's easy to obtain support and other applications support it without special drivers, etc. I'm quite please with the drive, and would recommend it.

I would have preferred to have the Nero software, which seems to be the de facto standard. However, the Ulead software works fine and does the job.

Strengths: Fast and reliable, black faceplate.
Weaknesses: Kind of loud.
Summary: Great little dvd burner. Had it for almost a month now and no coaster yet. I'm using Fuji blank medias. The black faceplate matches my Antec case perfectly. So far so good, will definitely recommend this drive to others.

Strengths: It writes and reads CDs and DVDs very quickly and reliably. I really like the performance of this drive.
Weaknesses: It is a little weaker than the average drive in reading CDs with significant scratches on them.
Summary: I would recommend that you now get the NEC nd-3520 instead of this drive as it is a slight step up in writiing speeds but still the same reliability of this great CD drive manufacturer.

Strengths: Double layer burning, price.
Weaknesses: Loud when reading CDs.
Summary: I bought this to burn double layer DVDs (however I need to wait until DL media prices to come down). So far, I haven't had any problems buring CDs or DVDs. However, this drive is loud when reading CDs. I used to have a Pioneer A08 and it was much quiter. This drive reads even the music CDs at full speed, which makes it very loud. Other than that, with a price of about $40 after rebate, I can't complain.

There is a solution for loudness, using Nero disk speed or similar utility. However, you have to run the utility all the time. A firmware solution like Pioneer drivers would be much better.

Strengths: DVD +/-R burn Speed, Dual layer.
Weaknesses: Dual layer burn speed of 2.4x
Summary: I have burnt a few DVDs at 16x with no coasters. I have also burnt three dual layer dvds. It was nice to be able to burn over 8 Gigs on one disc but the burn speed of 2.4x is less than the avarage speed of 4x offered by most Dual layer dvd burners.
