Strengths: This was very easy to set up. Directions are easy to follow. Works great with TIVO.
Weaknesses: The buttons could be a little bigger
Summary: This is the first remote that I have found that I could get to work with all of my components. Not only that, it worked on the first try. It was easy to set up. No more programming macros into a remote or going through the teaching mode that never seems to work anyway. This remote is awesome.

Strengths: Ease of setup, help button, strength of IR signal
Weaknesses: Default setup for some components requires user to go through menus to get to controls (eg - PIP controls for tv)
Summary: One of the few universal remotes that can truly control everything. Setup was a breeze, simply connecting to the logitech website and answering a few questions on how my components are connected and how I use them for different activities (eg watch tv, watch dvd, etc).

Signal strength was very strong, I could control all of my components from 3 rooms away while my original tv remote could only go to the edge of the tv room.

Strengths: Easily replaces multiple remotes. High WAF.
Weaknesses: Web-based configuration can be clunky at times.
Summary: 2005-06-07 05:21:56 Was up and running within a couple hours of starting the web-based programming task. Currently replaced 6 remotes with this one.

Got to 95% of what I wanted very quickly and easily. The last 5% will take a little more effort. Have heard that it uses batteries relatively quickly (but it replaced 6 remotes!).

Strengths: The idea is ingenious, one button task control of multiple electronics, interactive online programing of the remote and your unique set up,that you save and can change. Help feature on the remote
Weaknesses: It doesn't always work as smoothly in my case because of the way my TV has to change the AV screens. the remote itself doesn't feel as substantially built.
Summary: I permanently put away 7 out of my 8 remotes. I still like my TiVo remote, but I could just as well use the Harmone remote. I love it. I wish the remote felt heavier in my hand, and the center "OK" button seemed less prone to falling apart. But I may be nittpicking. It's worth the money, especially with rebates.

2 Star ReviewI had 6 remotes floating around and decided to get ...
Strengths: relatively easy set-up, no need to program macros for multiple equipment, good online and phone support
Weaknesses: did not work with my particular TV, mushy buttons, key layout not the best
Summary: I had 6 remotes floating around and decided to get a universal remote to replace all of them. I ended up trying the Harmony 688.

Initial set-up was relatively easy, just enter what equipment you have in Logitech Harmony's interactive website, and the configuration is done for you. This was definitely a plus. I previously had a Sony AV-3000 LCD remote, and programming macro commands in that remote was really painful. In contrast, the online interactive website used by harmony to configure the remote control was very easy to use.

Off the bat, the remote was able to correctly control most of my AV equipment, except for my TV! I had a lot of trouble teaching the remote to switch between video input options in the TV, so I could watch TiVO, DVD or myTV from my computer. I think it was the particular sequence and timing of button pushes that's required to change my TV's input from one to another. Suffice it to say, I never got it decently to work despite great online and phone support from Logitech.

In addition, the buttons on the remote control were very mushy. I prefer a stiffer tactile response from remote buttons. The directional pad in the middle was not as responsive as I would have liked it to be. Finally, the button layout on the remote did not particularly suit me.

I think a lot of people will find this to be a great remote. Too bad it didn't work out too well for me. It's probably going back to the store.

Strengths: Smaller than my previous universal remote; easy to use
Weaknesses: Web site to load IR commands into remote is somewhat slow
Summary: I've been using a Sony universal remote for the past 5 years and found that for people other than myself, controlling our home theatre system was problematic. The Harmony remote senses the state of each component of the system and automatically makes changes depending on what you want to do (watch a DVD, watch TV, watch a videotape, listen to music, etc.) It is much easier for anyone to choose any activity that they want. This remote is very easy to use and highly recommended.

2 Star ReviewGreat Look and Feel, Lousy Battery Life
Strengths: Button placement, Ergonomics, Functionality
Weaknesses: Battery Life
Summary: My only downside to this remote was the battery life. I loved the look and feel of it. Worked great with my components. Super easy to program. I ended up upgrading to the rechargeable model.

Our first set of batteries lasted a few months. Next set only a few days (cheap batteries) and our final set lasted about a month (energizers).

Strengths: One remote to rule them all; programming via web-site; decent battery life; great customer service
Weaknesses: Activity buttons are difficult to see in dark; some components require custom programming by Logitech
Summary: I have had the 676, 880 and 688 Harmony remotes, and have been happy with this one in general. I am able to program all of my components via the web-interface, which it found them all. However, I had an issue with the timing of the RCVR being powered on and a DVD player plugged into the back of the RCVR. Logitech had to do some custom programming for me to get this to work. Not sure why I couldn't do this, but I am extremely impressed that they did the for me. They responded in just a few hours, and I had my problem resolved after just a few email exchanges. Bravo!

While I like having one remote, I find that I still keep some of the others around. For instance, the DVD player is a 7-disc changer, and for the life of me, I cannot get a Disk-Skip function to work! The screen is kind of small, so you need to scroll thru many screens to find what you are looking for. Also, it was difficult to emulate all of the buttons on my DirecTV interactive HD-DVR remote.

The buttons are small, and the colored activity buttons at the top are difficult to read in the dark, even with back-lighting.

I do prefer the 880 remote, even though it is more expensive. I like the bigger screen and color and charging cradle. Only wish it had RF control, but that is the 890, and sells for a whopping $350!!

Strengths: Easy to set up, very quick to learn, everything at your finger tips
Weaknesses: A little slow with the tivo responses
Summary: I have a Sony Remote Commander AV3000. It took me weeks to get the correct commands and processes down so that I could watch TV/Tivo and I still could not do everything with my surround sound (Sony Dream System). With the Harmony 688 I just followed the instructions on the screen and I could watch a DVD, TV/Tivo, and listen to music almost instantly. The only function I had to reconfigure was getting to the DVD menu. HIGHLY recommend this remote. I'm thinking about buying another for my bedroom system
