Strengths: Exceptionally fast for an ink jet. Output quality ranges from good to very good. Built-in Ethernet and 802.11g networking. Direct printing from cameras.
Weaknesses: For best quality, you need to change cartridges to match the output, swapping between black, photo color, and photo gray inks.
Summary: 2005-07-14 16:41:10 There's one big difference between the HP Deskjet 6840 Color Inkjet Printer and almost every other personal ink jet on the planet: Built-in networking with both an Ethernet port and 802.11g if you want to go wireless. This alone makes the 6840 viable to anyone who has a home network or is looking for a personal printer to use in the office. There's also a USB 2.0 port if you want to connect the old fashioned way, and even a PictBridge connector for cameras.

Strengths: High quality; wireless convenience
Weaknesses: ink expensive
Summary: I’ve had this wireless inkjet printer for about four months. The printing quality is very good. The speed also is good. The wireless capability made it very convenient to use. However, as with all inkjet printers, the ink costs too much. So I only use it on special occasions.

Strengths: Wireless, prints beautifully
Weaknesses: Printer goes to "sleep" - wired computer will "wake up" printer - wireless will not - I have to go and turn on for the wireless to work.
Summary: I called tech support and the settings they told me to change are not available to me. I wish it would NOT go to sleep, however, even with this little "glitch" (which I am still working to correct) I still love the printer. The printing is pristine. Pictures come out excellent. I would buy it again!!

Strengths: Quick Accurate
Weaknesses: sometimes spotty
Summary: It prints fairly quickly, is very accurate and has good color pictures. It always works when I plug my computer in directly, and almost never screws up with very small document sizes wirelessly. I have a mac and it was very easy to set up- I just connected to it through my browser at its local IP adress. The PC driver was sort of hard to set up and came with a lot of crap, and didn't work, but I hear that that driver has been fixed and there are no problems. Another solution to this is to get Bonjour for windows from apple.com to set it up, which is probably easier. In general a good printer just with a few problems with wireless.

Strengths: Printing is very good and fast. Wireless printing is convenient.
Weaknesses: Wireless setup is EASY for UN-SECURED wireless network only. The manual is no use and confused.
Summary: I have a SECURED wireless network, I could't setup the Deskjet 6840 for 2 hours. Finally, my way to set it up wireless: 1)enter your router URL address in your web browser, then disable wireless security (write down your authentication (WEP, WAP), encryption (TKIP, AES) and key code). 2)connect an ethernet cable to the printer and the router, then install the software 3) disconnect the ethernet cable, check if the printer can print wirelessly 4) install the software on the other computers on and check again. Press Report button on the printer to get a report page of the printer and network 5)use web browser, enter URL address of the router and re-activate your wireless security (enter exactly what you wrote down) 6) connect an ethernet cable again to the printer and the router 7)enter URL address of the printer (see it on report page) and use EWS (p.50-51 of Network guide) to enter what you wrote down for wireless security. WEP or WAP, TKIP or AES, and Key code or phrase must be the same on the router and printer and every wireless devices on your network.

If you mess up, press and hold down the Report Page button while press the Cancel button 3 times to reset the printer to factory default. Then do the setup again.

Later, if your wireless security changes, connect an ethernet cable to the printer and the router again and enter new wireless security setup for the printer. Again you must change new wireless security for all wireless devices on your network.
