Bad buy
Strengths: Lightweight, great pics till 180mm
Weaknesses: Guaranteed blurry shots if taken above 180mm
Summary: I bought this lens from Ritz just before my trip to see bears in Alaska. After three days of wildlife viewing and about 600 shots with a Nikon D70, I downloaded my pics to a laptop to discover that all shots above 180mm came out blurry.
The Ritz dealer told me these lenses were made by Sigma. The one I got however was clearly made by Tamron - Quantaray seems to be the name of a Ritz store brand, with origin being one of many possible Asian manufacturers.
The focusing worked quite well, and all shots were (upon taking the pics) well focused. The lens is light and easy to handle. The macro feature is quite handy, though it was impossible for me to come out of Macro mode without going to manual focus mode and manually moving the lens back within range before being able to switch back to normal mode.
But the final results revealed that while all shots taken at 70-180mm looked great, all shots taken at 180-300mm were very soft/blurry - not a single area in the picture came out in focus!
I purchased a second such lens in Alaska, hoping it was a problem specific to the one I had - but to no avail, same problems with the 2nd lens.
Both lens are going back to the store and I'm staying away from Quantaray from now on.
