An engaging title, but difficult to get started with
Strengths: Amazing online battles, amazing graphics, shows off the PS3 better than most games, strong gameplay both on the ground and in the air
Weaknesses: Learning curve is incredibly steep, very limited tutorials, online multiplayer only
Summary: (Note: I fully admit this is not the kind of game I normally play, so take this as a review from a bit of an "outsider". If you're more familiar with online war/combat games many of my complaints probably won't apply to you) I picked up Warhawk not entirely knowing what to expect, other than an incredibly well reviewed air combat game. What I got was a bit of a mixed bag-- on one hand the game has elements of some of the best games of all time (unlimited replayability, great sense of freedome, great graphics), but have it wrapped up in a package that unless you are incredibly familiar with lots of other similar games, you may not be able to figure out how to play! I was surprised that much of Warhawk was fought on the ground, or in vehicles. These parts are very well done but if you want to just be flying around, prepare to deal with a bit of downtime. The biggest downside is the multiplayer online play only. Warhawk is very clear about this requirement (I should add, it works fine on a wireless network connection, the box implies you need a wired ethernet connection) but it doesn't quite explain just how prevalent the online play is. There is very little by way of instruction in the manual (there is enough on "How to play" but not "What am I doing here?"), little training in the game, and a tremendous learning curve. When I first played I had no idea what I was doing and managed to get myself booted from server after server, with very little warning. I didn't mean to crash into random people's games but I had no idea what to do or how to play. (normally combat games aren't my thing but the Warhawk hype got to me) I eventually started figuring it out a little more but I still feel like I haven't really "gotten" this game. I am giving it 3 stars-- on premise and promise it deserves 5, but the execution of the game, at least from a newbie perspective, deserves a 1 or a 2. If you're new to the genre, as I basically am, it may be worth holding out until you've played some similar games enough to know what to do. Or rent it for a few days and see if it clicks with you. Good game, needs refinement. A good single player training mode would've basically solved my problems.
