Strengths: Easy to set up and use.
Easy to hold (rubber grips on the sides) and lightweight even with batteries in it. (2AA)
A good amount of memory for the price.
Weaknesses: Base map is very general (only shows major roads). Have to purchase a separate CD (which costs a lot) to view specific streets.
Summary: We spent a few hours researching handheld GPS devices. We chose the Garmin Etrex Venture based on its features for the price and reviews. We bought it primarily for geocache hunting.
We had read reviews about how easy it was to set up and use. We definitely agree with those reviewers. The directions included a quick startup guide as well as one with more detailed instructions and information.
We chose to read the quick start guide and then go out and try to locate a relatively easy-to-find cache. We were able to download the information into the unit from the geocache website with ease. Even with the limited directions from the start guide, we were able use the gps to locate the area where the cache was located, but due to heavy rains the day before, the area was too wet to actually get to the exact location of the cache.
If you're looking for a gps to use in your car to give you driving directions, this may not be model to get, because the basemap is so general. It will cost you possibly twice as much to purchase the unit and the street level map disk.
Overall, we would definitely recommend this to people who are just starting out with geocaching (as we are). It is a "step above basic" gps unit which does everything that we need and expect it to do.
