Summary: This is the 4th video baby monitor that we have tried. We got this to replace the audio only monitor we have because we are expecting baby #2 and didn't want to be running up and down stairs to check on baby #2 with child #1 running around alone downstairs.
I would recommend this product if you are looking for the following things:
Clear audio and video reception for 2 cameras (monitoring 2 rooms for 2 kids)
Clear nightvision
Portable receiver with decent size screen (2.25")
Decent battery life (can last a day of intermittent use - primarily during child's naps) on portable unit
Automatic scanning between 2 cameras for nighttime use
We settled on this baby monitor because it didn't cause problems with our wireless internet or Wii internet connections and because it met all of our requirements as listed above.
The weaknesses listed were addressed as follows:
(1) The interference only occurs when we are walking around the house, and once we settle in (like for the night) it goes away. The interference can also be alleviated by moving the placement of the receiver. So the interference is noticeable, but tolerable.
(2) We don't use the rechargeable batteries that came with the monitor - we've switched to Duracell NiMH rechargeable batteries (2500mAh). The receiver recharges the batteries that are in the unit when it is plugged in, so you can only use rechargeable batteries, that's all we use anyway so it wasn't an issue with us.
(3) The on/off for the video on the monitor is a small switch (rather than a large button) placed on the side of the unit (rather than on top.) It's hard to switch on/off when the unit is plugged in (which we do overnight). But you get used to it and can figure out how to hold the receiver so that you can switch it on easily. You have to pick up the receiver to turn the video on/off because of the placement of the switch, but you have to pick it up to see the picture on the screen clearly (especially if you wear glasses and it's the middle of the night and you're half-asleep) so it's no big deal.
(4) Turn the receiver so it's not facing you at night. It's so bright, it does cast a shadow on the wall of the lamp on the nightstand, but it's not too bad as long as it's not facing you. The camera in the child's room also has bright green LEDs, but it doesn't seem to bother our son.
Also, I listed the sensitive audio as a strength. We like to hear if our son is congested through the night and this monitor does that. Some other video monitors we tested
would NEVER work for audio - we could barely hear anything at all. You might not like how sensitive this monitor is, though I think you could always control it by the volume of the receiver, which is adjustable.
I give this monitor a 4 star rating instead of 5 because you can certainly find more expensive monitors with even clearer night vision (we think it depends on the # of infrared LEDS on the camera) but this suffices for US.
Note: be sure that you buy your monitor from somewhere that you can return it. We tested out several different video monitors before finding one that worked with all the electronics in our home. We really think that just because a monitor works well in our house, doesn't mean it'll work in yours. You've just got to give it a try and be prepared to return it if it doesn't work well for you.
