Strengths: Great bass response and high end. Excellent value for the price.
Weaknesses: Odd shape
Summary: These are excellent speakers! I was going on a trip and wanted to get some speakers to use with my iPod. My first notion was to use some old computer speakers. However, I decided to invest the forty odd dollars and give these a try. I was more than pleasantly surprised. The bass response is simply incredible for speakers this small. Really, you would have to listen to them to believe how much bass these speakers have! Clarity, imagery and instrument definition are all remarkable. The high end was even and precise without sounding tinny. Even with an iPod they put out more than enough sound to fill a large hotel room.
The only small gripe I have is that they are a slightly odd shape which made them a little hard to pack in a carry on. Still they might have had to be built this way to give the amazing lower end that the speakers possess. I've had them for about six weeks and waited until I used them several times before writing this review. I own some JBL home speakers and in many ways these little dynamos are every bit as good.
I want to note that I bought these solely for use when I'm traveling and though I'm sure would work very well as home computer speakers, my review is based on how they performed as travel speakers. I have read some complaints about the Duet not having a head phone jack (though it actually does have one in the back), and the lack of bass and treble controls (not something one would usually find on computer speakers), but these weren't features I was looking for in travel speakers. I have also read about a persistent hum coming from the speakers when no music is playing but this is something I have not experienced and I suspect was caused by placing the speakers too close to some other poorly shielded electrical device.
Overall, I would highly recommend the JBL Duets. For around $40 you can't go wrong.
