Strengths: Fastest DVD DL drive available as of Oct 04. Multi-format capable. Quiet.
Weaknesses: Power button. Eject button.
Summary: I bought the d2 because it is/was the fastest DL drive available. It is actually a NEC drive packaged for Lacie. I'm not sure of the NEC model #.

The drive arrived from Lacie sightly askew with one of the styrofoam inserts separated from the drive. No problem, there was no damage. It was very simple to install with XP: the OS does it for you upon start up. I had to figure out on my own that half of the software on the provided disc is not needed (some of it is for MAC). The PDF manual did not open-up on the disc, so I went and downloaded it from Lacie's web site.

I immediately burned a DVD-ROM using Easy CD Creator with no problems. Sony DVD Architect 2.0 recognized the drive as did Vegas 5. I also hooked it up via Firewire to my laptop and burned another disc.

My only reservations are the following: the blue power button which has absolutely no "feel" to it at all. When I first connected the unit, I tried pushing it several times to turn it on but it didn't seem to work. On the 7th or 8th try it magically turned on. Then I "learned" the secret which is simply to push hard and don't expect any response other than the blue light coming on. In addition, the eject button is in the lower right corner and a bit difficult to press with the drawer open.--Neither of these is a big deal.

I would recommend this unit.

Strengths: Well built, easy setup, intelligent power on-off.
Weaknesses: cheaper maybe?
Summary: The unit is very well made. Despite it's bulkiness which is expected. The unit contains internal fans, which is probably why it is longer than a typical 5.25" external drive. The drive automatically powers on and off through USB when the computer is on or off.

Burning DVD+Rs or CD-Rs are a breeze. Although not the fastest dual layer burner, it is still decent for its price. As for the price, an internal drive of its same level should be around the 50-80s, so this is almost twice the cost. Unless you have a laptop or just not enough space in your case, I would recommend getting an internal one to save money. Otherwise, this unit is well worth the price.

Strengths: Speed & dual interface (USB2.0 & FW400).
Weaknesses: Best to match the burn speed to the specified, usually slower (2.4X), speed of most DL DVD+R discs currently available instead of letting the h/w & s/w detect it or the burned disc may not be good.
Summary: My second Lacie external DVD burner (single layer last one) and it is working as expected. The unit works as expected after burning several DL DVD+R discs. The one thing that holds me back from giving a 5-star rating: manually setting the burn speed to match the listed one of the medium seems to be necessary instead of select "Best" to let the s/w & h/w to determine it, for the NEC 3500AG drive is capable of burning DL DVD+R disc at 4X instead of 2.4X. Test-burned with "Best" setting with Toast 6 Titanium with a Verbatim DL DVD+R rated at 2.4X resulted in an unusable burned disc. Manually set the speed to 2X and the burn was successful. This "issue" does not seem to be applicable to CD+-R/RW. Maybe the speed detection works better on CD media?

Strengths: cool titanium color, sturdy design, fast speed (up to 16x), capable of dual layer writing, compatible with mac (which is what i got)
Weaknesses: power button is not sensitive - need to press it very hard (but this can be a strength if one accidentally touches it powering it off during an operation); a bit noisy at high speeds
Summary: this dvd burner is awesome to use. it's easy to store (on shelf, on desk, on top of other external equipment). i think the titanium color is really cool, and the outer exterior is rough with friction, which is good to stack other things on it without it sliding off. the outer case is metal, making it quite sturdy. it's fast and reliable, but it's a little noisy when it rotates on high speeds. the disk eject/load button is on the bottom right corner, which is fine but sometimes a bit hard to reach when the drawer is open and i need to reach it to close. no big deal, i guess. my only gripe was when i first got it, the burner burned a dvd-r at 16x speed, even though my blank media cd was only good for 8x. this messed up the burning and i ended up wasting about 3 blank dvd-r's, which was a bit expensive. but i realize this might have been a computer detection problem, or a software problem. i subsequently solved the problem by setting the speed myself. it could have also been the blank media dvd-r problem, acting as a 16x speed disk when it wasn't. not sure about this one. within the past month, i have backed up my dvd collection and burned around 150 dvd's without fail. this burner has solved all my storage needs. rather than having to buy more and more external hard disk storage space, i can now burn huge amounts of information onto backup dvd disks. i'm putting all my movies, music, mp3's, pictures, etc. on dvd-r's to backup. it's great. soon, i will learn how to edit home movies and send them to my parents who can see dvd's of my newborn son. yeah!:) i would recommend this product. happy burning!!!!

Strengths: Powers down automatically when you shut off your computer or remove the USB cable. Included software handles most of the activities that typical users might want to do.
Weaknesses: The unit is physically larger than other desktop USB disk drives. After I first installed software, I started getting an error message on startup, but a second install solved the problem.
Summary: It's not quite clear (and there is some conflicting information in the README file) which programs/files should be loaded, depending on which OS you are using and what you want to do with the product. It would be helpful if LaCie provided an overview of each included software product or a document that had a table showing various tasks and which software product(s) provide that feature.

Strengths: Great software, easy to install with great bonus OEM Roxio included. The hardware works like a dream!
Weaknesses: There might have been a bit more written information along with a suggestion of which discs to use
Summary: The shipper had packed the retail box in a new and nice looking outer container with the proper amount of dunnage. It took me about 15 minutes from the time I opened the box until I was able to start formating a blank DVD. I have had experience with a CD R from another and very well known manufacturer. LACIE really knows how to make a great DVD recorder. The enclosed software discs were easy to install and included new and really useful tools.
