Strengths: Works as advertised! Tunes both HD TV, standard def TV and FM radio. Stable on both Windows XP and Vista.
Weaknesses: On a couple of occassions over the past month of use I've experienced video and voice being out of sync - but restarting the app clears things up.
Summary: I read a lot of reviews of TV tuners and decided to give AVerTV Hybrid Ultra USB a try. Key advantages to me were:
1. It's an external USB device; and
2. It has a hardware MPEG-2 encoder which greatly reduces CPU utilization
After working with this for 30 days I am totally satisfied. It just flat out works the way it ought to most all the time. Quality of the on-screen TV picture is great. The sound quality is also very good. I connect my computer to my 56" Samsung HDTV and the audio and video quality are outstanding. I highly recommend this product. There is an updated driver on the aver.com website, so I loaded it just to be current, but I didn't perceive much difference.
Based on other reviews, I went ahead and purchased a Philips Silver Sensor Indoor HDTV thinking that the stock antenna that came with the unit might not be good enough. Thus I never even tried the stock antenna until after I had everything up and working. Just for kicks I connected the relatively small stock antenna and much to my surprise it works great. No degredation in HDTV picture quality at all. This is probably due to the fact that I am located rougly 20 miles from the HDTV signal sources, so if you are located further away "your mileage may vary."
