Strengths: Has a built in tuner to pick up the digital channels in 2009.
Weaknesses: Have to read the user manual to do most functions.
Summary: Very Attractive unit, well built, not a cheapy plastic model. Easy to hook up, great value for the money. I shopped around for days and this is the best buy out there. Would recommend this above all others.

Strengths: DVD recorder & VCR all-in-one, easy menu system, HDMI
Weaknesses: none found
Summary: I tried 4 different brands/models of combo devices like this, but this is the only one I kept. All others had persistent quality issues, lacked need features (like chapter & thumbnail creation on DVD+RW discs), or had poor video quality. Very happy with this one, and highly recommend to those looking to convert their VHS's to DVD's.

Strengths: DVD and VHS Dubbing all in one unit. Daily and Weekly Timer ability. Record to DVD or VHS
Weaknesses: The User not reading the User Manual.
Summary: I own 3 JVC VHS Recorders and this one is number 4. I purchased this unit from Jr.com because of the price.

I needed to begin replacing my VHS Recorders because except for watching what you previously have recorded, come February, 2009 Analog TV Signals will disappear and only Digital TV Signals will remain. I wanted at least one DVD Recorder with a Digital Tuner and capable of picking up unscrambled Digital Cable-TV Channels. This unit can do this.

But I will be holding off buying anymore TV Equipment until the end of 2008, when the TV DVD and VHS Recorders will be coming out with products that will work on any Cable System.

The new system / platform is being called Tru2Way.

I would recommend to others to buy this unit, but if you can wait, wait until the Tru2way products come out onto the market at the end of the year.

Strengths: Good Options
Weaknesses: Poor Quality
Summary: This would be a great device BUT, in the 11 months I have had this unit I have taken it in TWICE for service. Beware, labor warranty is 90 days and both times the labor cost was $75. Find a different manufacturer who can deliver quality electronics!

Strengths: nice build, all features you need
Weaknesses: no hard drive to record to, but there are other units for that feature
Summary: Very good unit. Most importantly has a coax (rf) in to allow connection to existing cable (ie tv tuner) but also has qam tuner to capture free unencrypted over the air ditigal signals if your broadcast area has any. Secondly, unit has hdmi that works with both the vcr and dvd upconverting the signals to your tv or projector as the case may be. Cannot watch a tape while recording a dvd but can watch a dvd while recording tape - go figure. Good feature set and connection options, good manual, good price point. $139 shipped May 2008 from Vanns.
