Strengths: Newest NVIDIA 8600m GT for gaming. Core 2 Duo CPU at 2.2ghz is more than enough for most applications.
Weaknesses: Not as slim and light as some other 15.4" notebooks. Green lights might seem "gaudy" to some.
Summary: 2007-07-21 22:44:51 This notebook replaced a 3 year old desktop (Athlon64 3000+, 80gb hard drive, 2gb DDR400, ATI X800XT 256mb) and I like the fact that in every way it is an improvement. My old desktop used to struggle with F.E.A.R. on maximum settings at 1152x864, but I now get an average of 44 FPS at 1680x1050 on maximum settings. Also noteworthy is the NVIDIA 8600m GT that comes in the ASUS G1S has GDDR3 clocked at 700mhz (1400mhz effective). Other notebook manufacturers use GDDR2 clocked at 400mhz (800mhz effective) on their video cards, which leads to reduced performance in video games. So if you want the best gaming notebook in a 15.4" form factor, the ASUS G1S can't be beat. In addition, for me, the notebook looks quite nice, but I know that some folks might find the green lights to be a deal breaker in the style department (they can be disabled, but I kind of like them when I am gaming).

Strengths: All-in-one laptop with camera, card reader, and good display
Weaknesses: bulky and expensive
Summary: The ASUS G1S-A1 is an excellent laptop for gaming purpose. It boasts a webcam, great audio, and an excellent display resolution. The device also has card readers for your SD, MMC, etc cards. The DVD writer worked great out of the box, and has burnt all kinds of CDs and DVDs, including the taiwan-made DVDs that had lots of coaster on my old drive. The laptop is a little heavy and somewhat expensive, but with all the loaded features, it is bang for the buck. The laptop also works great with universal port replicators.

2 Star ReviewSomewhat disappointed
Strengths: Dazzling display, crisp keystrokes
Weaknesses: SPEAKERS! USB port access
Summary: Although this machine is overall a very nice system, it's being called a gaming system is not realistic. The speakers are under the front edge, so the sound directs downward, and not very clear or loud. To get good sound I bought a Creative Labs attachable speaker which does wonders but cost an additional fifty dollars. Additionally, although not the fault of ASUS, having Windows Vista on it is a big downer. (But that's for a different review.)

The only USB ports are on the right rear. I found this to be a bit inconvenient for quick installation and removal of flash drives. The ports are very close together in a configuration of 2 + 2, so my big fingers have to turn the system around (or close the cover) to utilize them and not pull the wrong thing out. At least one port on the side would have been nice.

Lastly, the front latch is cheap plastic. It's already broken. So if the cover is closed, I have to use the tip of a something like a paperclip, pen, etc. to slip in the latch to slide it open.

On the positive side, I have never seen a clearer or brighter screen. The keys are nicely spaced and crisp and responsive. The machine is sufficiently fast.

I buy ASUS components for most of the computers I build, but I'm not sure the laptop is their MVP.

3 Star Reviewworth a try
Strengths: everything you can expect out of your money
Weaknesses: poor cooling, short bettery life.
Summary: Originally, I was looking for a replacement for my old desktop. I figured a laptop could be more convenient, and

G1s was clearly the best laptop that suits my desire. After three month of experiencing the cool features and the powerful performance of this device, I was convinced that this computer worth every dollar I spent on it.

G1s has everything you can expect out of a laptop - high quality screen, fast processor, powerful graphic card that supports HD video, large memory, and all the other features. Read the product description.

Although, G1s has a short battery life and the processor gets quite hot after running at high capacity for a long period of time(since its powerful nature requires certain amount of power and heats up the system faster), G1s serves its purposes with confidence.

As a replacement G1s can not function like the way desktops do, and it’s too expensive to be a alternative entertainment equipment. Also, due to the fact of heavy weight and short battery life you might not want to take it with you anywhere you go. However, G1s is still too cool for me admit that I should have brought a desktop.

Honest Suggestions:

If you are looking for a laptop for typing, surfing, playing music or videos while you are at starbucks, a business laptop will do the job. If you are a crazy gamer then go for Voodoo or Alienware is more suitable.

However, if you are somewhere in between, such as an engineer who needs to run some programs that needs certain amount of juice out of your computer while working on the site; or maybe you are a traveler who likes to have a well combined entertaining system to ease up the life a little, then G1s is the one and probably the most affordable laptop for the duty.
