Strengths: 100 watts per channel of real audio (not the overrated Sony -- phony watts). The difference in being able to drive a lower impedance load (4 ohms minimum) is really appreciated.
Weaknesses: A little deep for for some rack systems -- but the thermal performance of the receiver is excellent even at full rated output.
Summary: 2005-01-08 15:46:29 If you are looking for a two channel receiver that sounds great and has low distortion -- this is the one to go for. No frills, just good strong sound. The Mirage M3 speakers never sounded so good.

Strengths: High power output, exceptionally clean signal with low THD, attractive appearance.
Weaknesses: A large, deep unit; may not fit in some cabinets.
Summary: For anybody in the market for a reasonably priced receiver that's strictly for audio (it's got standard inputs for video components but no decoder for surround sound and all the other junk you'd expect from a typical home theater rig) this is the receiver to buy. I've got it hooked up to the lower-end Denon CD changer, a decent 10 band EQ, and a pair of Bose 301s and it sounds terrific: super clean with no noise or mid-range glare. For the price, power, and clarity the DRA-685 can't be beat. Truely a nice piece. Five out of five.

Strengths: absolutely clean sound with very clear highs, solid bass and very good midrange. Runs my 4 Ohm Canton Floor standing speakers at full sound at only 8 O Clock setting. Real Quality at low price.
Weaknesses: remote control must have been designed by japanese children for tiny hands..
Summary: Amazing quality at very realistic price. Exotic & expensive amplifiers cannot do much better. I invited an audiophile friend with expensive seperates and asked him to listen to the sound without looking at the unit. He did not believe his ears or his eyes whatsoever. Not always is the most expensive the best !Denon 685 has great presence and projects music as a 3 dimensional entity. The highs, midrange and bass are all properly projected with no coloration or emphasis on only one particular sound. Great quality even for stereophiles at a super low cost compared to the exotics. I just sold a Bryston that eminated a hum that no one could get rid of.
