Strengths: Easy install. Very inexpensive. Works flawlessly.
Weaknesses: None found.
Summary: I bought this drive as an inexpensive way to recover drive images. I have an external DVD burner that is not recognized by the image software I use. This drive fit the bill. It is fast for both DVDs and CDs. It does not make a great deal of noise. I liked it so well I bought a second drive for my other machine.

Strengths: Best bang for the buck. I bought it so that my kids can watch DVD on their old PC and I can be left alone with the DVD player in the living room. It's worth every penny.
Weaknesses: None
Summary: This is truly a plug-and-play player. All I did was just plug it in, set the plastic cover to the Master slot (diagram was clear to show which one it is) and presto - it worked! I would recommend using the PowerDVD disk included since it is very simple to use and defaults at full-screen which is not the case if you use any free dvd player software. This is worth the price I paid for it.

Strengths: Easy installation. Quiet motor mechanism! Great low price!
Weaknesses: None!
Summary: The GDR-8163 DVD-ROM is a great choice for building a new system or as a replacement drive for your current desktop. The GDR-8163 is a plug and play device that installs in a standard 5" drive bay and is connceted just as any other optical drive unit. The retail package comes bundled with software that allows you to watch DVDs on your PC. It provides quick read times with amazingly quiet motor noise. The low cost was the final selling point, less than $30.00 to the door using 2 day fed-ex ground delivery. This unit has nothing negative that I could write about!

Strengths: Fast, easy to install, price
Weaknesses: No volume control
Summary: When I purchased my first DVD-ROM drive for $150.00+, I did not know I can buy one for about $15.00 in a few years. DVD-ROM drives are so common and low priced, it is not sensible to buy CD-ROM drives any more. This LG is one of the best buy. It has supred performance and the price cannot get any better. It will be even better if it comes with the volume control on the front like most DVD-ROM drives used to have.

Strengths: Very fast, very cheap.
Weaknesses: None so far.
Summary: This is a great drive, made by a good manufacturer (LG). It also pretty inexpensive about $25 inc. S&H. Would purchase again in no time.

Strengths: Easy instalation
Very fast
Weaknesses: 256kb cache
loud spin-up
Summary: 2006-03-30 06:29:49 This is a great drive for the price. it has a low read time of 110ms for dvd and 98ms for cd, a high transfer rate of 22,100kb/s dvd and 7,800kb/s cd, and a high read rate of 16x dvd and 52x for cd. the only bad things i found on this drive is the cache of only 256kb, and its a little loud. other than that its great.

Strengths: Ease of mechanical installation
Weaknesses: Documentation
Summary: Installation and operation were very straight forward. No installation documentation was included (where do wire go?). Had to call an IT friend to find out where to hook up wires. Unit operation is satisfactory.

Strengths: Price, easy to install, works flawlessly.
Weaknesses: None
Summary: I mainly purchased this DVD drive so I could install data for my flight simulator from DVDs. It is my first DVD drive and it was not only easy to install, but has worked flawlessly. BTW, I have also used it to play and rip music from CDs and for playing games with a CD required in the drive while playing. (DVDs and CDs both work great.) The beige color also perfectly matched my tower case. I highly recommend this drive. The price can't be beat, and it works great.

good drive for the price
Strengths: reliable, fast, and cheap, in price I meant.
Weaknesses: very loud when spinning.
Summary: 2006-01-28 20:32:35 Why you ask, in this day and age, where one can easily get a 16X DVD dual layer burner for $50 would I buy a mear DVD-Rom drive? The answer is simple: to burn DVD's. I already got a name brand burner. Now I need a fast DVD drive that is FAST to rip DVD's. From what I read and my own experience, I got it. It reads real fast. It is relatively quiet when it settles down. But it is very very loud during its intial spinning/reading. And it is reliable, no problem so far.
I only wish it were a slot loading DVD-ROM. Those are so cool, but so darn expensive.

Strengths: Low price, easy to install
Weaknesses: Noisy
Summary: 2005-07-09 06:07:21 This is a very good price for a 16x DVD-ROM. Installing is not hard at all. The only problem is when it spins up to read the disc the first time, the noise level is quite high, and then it slows back and quiets down after a minute or two.
