3 Star ReviewSony MDR-NC22 Noise canceling headphones
Strengths: small size, battery life
Weaknesses: loud hiss detracks from mild noise reduction
Summary: My main use for the Sony mdr-nc22 headphones, is as study aid. I review previous lectures and update my notes while in the library. There are a variety of sounds in this environment. They range from a very loud heating / ac unit, to people talking (yes in the library). The nc22 is excellent at reducing the heating / ac noise but, not so good with the other sounds. Overall it works, but not as good as my Sennheiser PXC 250 headphones in the same environment. I purchased the nc22 when I left the pxc 250 @ home on a trip. I have not tried the nc22 on the airplane yet. The pxc 250 does emit a mild hiss, it is much lower than the nc22 (barely audible). I do prefer the size of the nc22 to that of the pxc 250.

Strengths: portability
Weaknesses: ear buds can irritate the ears until you're used to them
Summary: As an ear bud type of noise cancelling device, this item does about all that can be done to enhance music or movie listening in a noisy environment like air travel. Noise cancelling in the specified frequency band is as claimed, enabling much better perception of the program at a reduced volume setting, which is less abusive to the ears. Noise reduction at higher frequencies is due solely to the air seal between the buds and the ears. This is not a fault of the design but a consequence of the "physics" of the problem: phase cancellation of noise at shorter wavelengths is problematic in terms of the dimensions involved. The user should choose the most effective from among the three flexible "eartips" in the kit.

Heavy, over-the-ear phones might be superior to ear buds overall, but at the cost of lugging them around. Reviewers have noted incomplete noise cancellation and hiss when the unit is switched on, but these complaints are negligible in real situations. For sixty bucks they make a big difference -- and they fit in your shirt pocket.

One thing to consider when shopping for noise cancelling phones is their audio sensitivity. If your source has limited audio output power, avoid phones with sensitivity less than 100 dB.
