Strengths: HD upconversion (up to 1080i); Digital opitical input; Multi-format playback including DiVX; USB input; Strong subwoofer (plenty of bass); Firmware upgradable
Weaknesses: Filmy CD tray and CD door
Summary: This Samsung 5.1 home theater system is packed with tons of features for the money. I'd like to mention some of the features that I like:

1) Easy set up: An audio cable is attached with a specific color plug at the end. The speakers are equipped with terminal tabs (clips) for connection, unlike some systems at this price range that supply speakers built-in with cables. Although already sounded good, I replaced the Samsung speakers with another set of mine for improvement. 2) HD upconversion. It is up to 1080i via HDMI (yes, it improves regular DVDs' picture quality, albeit the improvement seems marginal.) 3) Firmware upgradable (check Samsung's Website). 4) A USB input (It reads and plays my SanDisk 2GB stick.) 5) A digital optical input. 6) DiVX. It plays many of my DiVX encoded video files. Now I'd like to point out the negative part that I've experienced so far: The filmsy CD tray and CD door. The CD door broke after 3 days of usage (I had to return the system for a new one.) All in all, it is a very good entry-level home theatre system, and am satisfied with it.

Strengths: Easy to setup and use, very attractive components.
Weaknesses: Somewhat weak subwoofer, HDMI output issues.
Summary: I purchased this system for two reasons, a relatively low cost but name brand system and the ability to add a wireless rear speaker kit (see other review on SWA-3000). I have not been disappointed overall, I didn't expect theater like performance but it is nice.

Components are very nice looking and I like the single DVD player instead of most units changers (who is going to watch 5 movies without getting up to go to the bathroom?).

Subwoofer output is a bit weak as you would expect from a passive unit, but placed properly in a corner it is acceptable. Overall sound quality from all speakers is pretty good, even without having to mess with balancing and adjusting tone.

Only issue I had was originally trying to use HDMI output, I couldn't get it to work. HDMI from my cable box works fine, but no picture from the HTS. I gave up and just used component cables, but someday I'll try HDMI again.

Strengths: Cost, HDMI up convert to 1080i.
Weaknesses: Sub-Woofer
Summary: This has the be the best bang for the buck in Home Theater System. It's small and sounds great. One area I hope Samsung will address in the future is the weak Sub-Woofer. But, what can you expect for a system that cost under $200.

Strengths: Sound quality, built in DVD player.
Weaknesses: no switching mechanism
Summary: HT-X40 home theater system includes 5 speakers and a subwoofer, built in DVD player with the receiver. It can hold 5 dvd's or cd's in the cd/dvd player.

Strengths: Upscales to 1080i. USB host feature supports MP3, JPEG support, WMA and DivX. Sounds processing effects includes pops, jazz, rock, studio, club, hall, movie and church.
Weaknesses: Slow Drive mechanism. No 1080p, only 1080i. Does not recognize a NTFS Partition. No AM radio. No Graphic Equalizer: Cannot adjust bass, treble, or mid range frequencies.
Summary: 2008-07-01 08:41:46 This is Samsung's lowest priced unit in its X-series Home Theater Systems. The unit is not bad for $150. It's able to play both NTSC and PAL DVDs. It can upscale to 1080i. But I've not tried the HDMI output so I cannot tell how good the upscaling is. My biggest qualm is that the DVD/CD Drive mechanism is very slow: You have to wait for a while before the tray opens. The first couple of times I thought the unit was turned off. The unit can accept an optional wireless receiver for wireless surround speakers. The bass response is not bad for such a small sub-woofer.

Strengths: Purchased this set on clearance for $44.xx brand new from bestbuy. I eventually wanted to buy a tv and thought this would be a great system for a student in college.
Weaknesses: No HD dvd player. But hd-dvd is dead now so its not a big deal. The sub isn't powered, so don't expect to use this system in a living room and get big sound.
Summary: Overall, its a wonderful setup for a small bedroom or occasional movie watching. Wouldn't rate this system as the end all of all systems since it doesn't even compare to many of the higher end systems. But at under $50 its about the same price as a dvd player. Get this only if you're on a budget and would like a decent setup for an HDTV.

Strengths: Low Price, HDMI Output, DIVX, USB Input
Weaknesses: HDMI Outout Issue, Flimsy Tray, Digital Input Issues
Summary: I bought this system on Thanksgiving for only two reason, PRICE ($100) and HDMI Output. For this price I was not expecting a great sound, but to my surprise the sound is comparable to my $250 Panasonic Home Theatre system. Bass from Subwoofer is also good. I have some issues with HDMI and Digital Input and Samsung agreed to repair it, but the shipping cost has to be paid by the customer. But it works great with othre connections. Overall a good buy for low price.

Strengths: Powerful subwoofer, good volume, accepts USB flash drives
Weaknesses: Limited play compatibility with files on USB, long time to start playing DVD
Summary: This theater system is a great value. It's reasonable price and the system delivers excellent sound, especially the powerful bass from the subwoofer. What I like most is that it can play images, mp3, and video files from USB flash. I saved my movies on the USB and plug it in the system and it plays!..no more discs! I did, however, have some problems with some files (no stopping, can't fast forward, etc.) but no big deal. I really like this system...good sound quality...low prices compare to similar specs machines.
