Strengths: Black levels, Picture Quality, multiple 1080p hookups, great looking TV, and overall great value.
Weaknesses: no DVI port, but can be solved with DVI-HDMI adapter. Also would be nice to have 1 HDMI port on the side for a camcorder.
Summary: 2007-07-29 21:31:25 I have owned this TV for about a month and I can honestly say I would highly recommend it. There are plenty of people at avsforum complaining about banding and I must say you would have to struggle to ever see any. I think most these guys are looking for problems instead of enjoying the TV. They do have great calibration settings though. Trust me though I compared Samsung, Sony, and Sharp and for the price hands down the best deal out there! Samsung and Sony have clouding issues and this TV doesn't. By far this TV has an amazing picture with the 120hz and 4ms response. I watch MLB, Golf, and movies in HD and it is amazing. Truly the best HDTV I have seen for sports or movies.

3 HDMI ports, and 2 composite are also 1080p. If not having a computer hookup scares you off know this TV was made to handle one so just buy an DVI-HDMI adapter and enjoy. I Watch DVD's with a normal DVD that up converts and it looks great. SD shows look as good as any LCD I have ever seen. You won't go wrong with this TV buy it and enjoy the best black levels you will see on an LCD and the first I chose over a plasma. AWESOME TV!

Strengths: 1. 120Hz Refresh rate & Fast response time (4 ms) for Good PQ for fast moving objects 2. Deep black levels and great color reproduction 3. True 1080p 4. 3 HDMI ports 5. Wide viewing angle
Weaknesses: 1. Some Banding issue 2. Speaker quality mediocre 3. No PC (RGB) Input 4. Frame too shiny
Summary: 2007-09-27 15:48:49 This Sharp LC-52D82U TV is my very first HDTV. I had done extensive comparison shopping before settling on this one. After about a month of use, I must say my decision was a wise one!

My dilemma was between this Sharp model and Sony's KDL-52XBR4 model. I did not even consider Plasma TV's since they still had issues with burn-in / high power consumption (~2X flat LCD's!) and 1080p versions were too pricey. While the KDL-52XBR4 had slightly better picture quality (especially in Standard Def) and PiP feature it certainly was not worth >$1,000 more. Besides, I do not watch SD channels that often and PiP feature is often supported in the Cable Set-top Box. Sharp's LC52D82U TV has many positives that other brands and models did not offer. Fast (4 ms) response time and the 120Hz refresh rate (I believe the 1st product in the market with this feature) result in amazingly smooth picture quality esp. when watching fast action scenes. I think Sharp's TV's offer the deepest black levels compared with others. It of course supports True HD (1080p) resolution and has 3 HDMI ports which I really like since I can hook this up with my HD-DVD player, camcorder AND my PS3 controller simultaneously! The picture quality while watching HD channels or playing PS3 is truly awesome. The feature menu is pretty easy to navigate through as well - I rarely had to reference my owner's manual to find anything. I had not used this with a wall mount but this is light enough to mount by 2 adults.

Now, there are a few minor negatives about this TV. As early adopters in AVS Forum would say, there IS slight "banding" issue with this - I see 2 vertical bands when watching darker backgrounds but it's barely noticeable. Also, the speakers are only 15W so sound is not as ample as I want it to be, so I had to hook it up to my music center for additional speakers. It does lack a PC Input so you'd need a media converter (like AVerMedia's QuickPlay that I use) to hook it up to your PC. Lastly, the frame is a bit too shiny to look "natural" in my standards. Standard Def picture is of course of "as expected quality" but not too worse compared with Sony's.

But overall, this TV is a great buy with outstanding picture quality esp. at ~$1,000 (I got a special deal on it) less than the Sony. I highly recommend this TV but if you do want to buy a new LCD TV, I'd suggest waiting for the new D64U series which will hit the market in Sept.'07 since this model is now being discontinued!

Strengths: smooth display of fast movement video,HD natural color, easy adjuable remote.
Weaknesses: Bad sound, listened not so nature
Summary: 2007-11-07 08:15:50 Two reasons Pushing me spend 2K bucks to buy this big LCD screen, first, Sharp is always the leader in the LCD field with it's high quality, second, my friend send me a FF promotion code to get a nice price.

Base on three days using, it's highest resolution, natural color, and special showing the very fast movement as ESPN sport game is very smooth and comfortable, much better than my 37" Olevia, benefit from this Sharp's 8th generation LCD panel with 4ms(2 time fast than Olevia and other brands 8sm) response, and 120 Hz.

To recognize the true Sharp LCD panel just to see the Sharp panel has special 6 angle pix dot.

But, I don't know why this great big screen carries a bad speakers set. it sounds so disnature, even my wife min. it's sound and turn on my JBL speakers come with it.

Last week, I changed the connection between TV and the TimeWarner HD cable box with HDMI using a DVI to HDMI adapter (the TimeWarner HD cable box only has DVI outout). The speakers sound some better. Be careful, if you want to connect TV in this way, connect to TV input #6 (HDMI, and only this HDMI can choose different audio input), other HDMI input's video and audio signal fixed together, if your resource devices have HDMI output, just connect any HDMI input of this Sharp LCD TV. (DVI only has video signal)

Strengths: Great HD picture - beautiful details and colors after some tweakening. SD picture depends on the source of the material.
Weaknesses: Bands
Summary: First TV has visible three vertical dark bands on the middle of the screen. Call Sharp and was requested to email pictures of the TV screen showing bands. Day later got email from Sharp that they will be replacing TV with a new one. Week later got a phone call from the delivery company to set up appointment for delivery. They delivered new TV unpacked it and packed the old one. Great service from Sharp. New TV has slight banding too, but it is only visible in some gray scale test screens and not visible at all during normal TV viewing.

Strengths: Lots of inputs, great picture, great customer service from Sharp.
Weaknesses: None so far.
Summary: Adjusted the settings using avsforum site. Love the picture. Awesome build quality. It has 4ms response time, 120 Hz frame rate for fast motion, 10,000:1 Dynamic Contrast Ratio, 2 component video inputs that are HD 1080p compatible, 3 1080p compatible HDMI inputs. I especially like the bezel more compared to another tv I purchased which was the 65D64U. I see no signs of banding whatsoever and no clouding issues. Very happy with the unit.

Strengths: Great picture, classic design; competitive price
Weaknesses: Speakers are weak; unit generates lots of heat
Summary: This is my second Sharp LCD. We purchased a 42" LC-42D72U about four months ago (see also: Pricegrabber review on that unit) and based on our satisfaction with the 42" decided to add a second LCD in our house. The 52" unit (in family room) uses same remote but does have a few cosmetic differences (a blue "on" light, a few different hookup options). I cannot tell any difference between the two units other than size and weight. I was able to wall mount the 42" by myself, but will need assistance to hang the 52" (weight and overall dimensions). Until mounting bracket is installed, the 52" is being used on the supplied stand. Stand is very easy to put together and offers very good stability. Remote control programming options are easy to understand and implement; the "Favorite Channel" function provides a total of 16 memorized channels on four buttons. Full HD programs are amazing, digital programs are good and conventional analog are so/so quality. At this point the built in QAM tuner is converting all unscrambled cable signals. We are waiting for Verizon Fios to be available in our area before we make a final decision on Verizon vs Comcast. At that time more HD channels will be available but for the time being the built in QAM tuner gets the non-scrambled HD signals for free. (Yes, Comcast knows about this). I've seen comments such as "no one ever says they bought a flat screen that was 'too big'"....well, I think we would have been satisfied with a 46" for the family room, but the 52" is really great and bigger probably is better! Although the built in speakers are weak, this unit connects with a seven speaker audio system for home theatre/DVDs. For regular television, the Sharp speakers are OK.

Strengths: Picture quality with both HD and SD sources, beautiful frame design, good ATSC tuner.
Weaknesses: Audio quality and remote control.
Summary: 2007-10-14 20:10:45 The picture quality is very crisp, color rendering of HD source is as good as TV's cost twice as much. Watching fast action movies or football games on this TV is amazing, thanks to 120 Hz refresh rate and 4 ms respond time. Built-in ATSC tuner is excellent, with low cost outdoor antenna in the house the TV pickup more digital channels than what is in Antennaweb for my area, and the signals are very strong too, the PQ of OTA HD is better than cable. Audio quality is another story, turn it up a little then the low frequency distortion is unbearable, turn the volume down to avoid distortion then you can not hear anything from 10 feet away. A real surround sound audio system is a must to enjoy action movies.

Strengths: Fantastic appearance, size, thin border, quality, picture
Weaknesses: input number and location, no headphone jack, speakers
Summary: After much deliberation, review, and side by side testing I purchased this unit over the Sony Bravia. With tweaking the picture quality is every bit as good as the Sony. I've seen absolutely NO banding on my unit that others have mentioned. I did however experience a blue pixel with the first unit sent to the house and they quickly came and replaced it as soon as I called to complain. Three months later I can say I'm very happy with the unit. I DOES put off a lot of heat though and the lack of a headphone jack makes late viewing tough without waking the house.

I haven't noticed any reflection issues depsite having the TV on a wall that gets a LOT of light from the window. There is actually far less reflection than my previous Panasonic HDTV. I will say the speakers are mouselike and require my receiver and Klipsch speakers for serious movie nights. Also, I would have appreciated more HDMI inputs as all 3 are areadly full.

Overall however this TV has exceeded my expectations and I would highly recommend it based upon it's appearance and performance.

Strengths: Easy setup, plug it in, turn it on, and go. Very flat, plenty of inputs. Friendly menu's, lot's of customizable settings.
Weaknesses: All inputs on the back, none easily accessible from the side. No menu access button on the unit, don't loose the remote. Black frame shows finger prints and reflections. No Picture-In-Picture.
Summary: So far I'm very pleased with this SHARP purchase. Easy to unbox,

takes two people to lift the unit out and place it face down so you

can attach the base. Plug it in, connect an input, power on and go.

Optical Picture Control (OPC) automatically adjusts brightness

as room brightness fluctuates. Lot's of manual adjustments available

for custom settings.

Images are very crisp. Being LCD, it is susceptible to the "screen door"

effect, or noticeable horizontal and vertical lines

between pixels. Not very visible if you sit more than

one screen width away. In most video's I only notice it if I'm looking for it.

Digital signal strength display helps adjust antenna direction.

Apparently no picture-in-picture capability which could be a

significantly missed feature.

While there are plenty of inputs, they are all on the back and none

along a side edge, inconvenient for the DVI to HDMI cable I want

to occasionally connect.

Overall this screen has turned out well for the investment. Consumer

Reports recommends getting the largest screen your budget will allow.

I was pretty close to purchasing a 46" from a competitor when this

SHARP caught my eye. Glad I went for the larger screen.

Strengths: Great Resolution, HD picture, Fast Motion
Weaknesses: Speakers are weak, Standard Definition channels look grainy
Summary: This TV is my first HDTV. I was 90% certain i would be buying a 1080p plasma, but after seeing how dark the plasma was compared to the LCD, I couldn't deny the brilliance and the pop of the brightness of the Aquos. It was similar to the Sony XBR at a MUCH lesser price. It was light enough for my wife and I to hang it on the wall with ease. It works great with an upconverting DVD player. I look forward to enjoying this television for years.
