Strengths: user friendly, reasonable price
Weaknesses: none so far
Summary: This is a very user friendly product.

VHS works fine and DVD quality looks good.

It only require simple setup.

The price is reasonable compare to other product. But people who want to buy up-converting DVD player has to know that you need a HDMI cable to do that. I recommend you research for it and buy it from pricegrabber and choose a not too expensive one. Don't buy those over-priced HDMI cable unless you have too much money to spend. I only pay 8.44 dollars including shipping for my HDMI cable and it works fine.

3 Star ReviewSamsung DVD/VCR combo
Strengths: Upconverts to 1080i, combo saves space.
Weaknesses: output from VCR is regular RCA composite. Remote is small, flimsy.
Summary: Slightly better picture from regular DVD's when upconverted to 1080i via HDMI. Output on DVD to HDMI but VCR is from regular RCA composite. At least S-Video ouput to get a decent picture, but I guess you get for you pay for ($79.57). The remote is small and kind of flimsy. If you have large fingers forget it. Overall I purchased this combo to save some shelf space. Works as advertised.

Strengths: Easy to install, a simple manual and design, a light weight, read everything!!!
Weaknesses: No TV tuner, but it's not a big deal!!!
Summary: I am an international student, and recenrly I bought this combo. Most of all, this combo is clearly easy to install even I do not read through a manual guide book. And a nice design and a cheap price are very strong forte!! If you want to buy a combo with TV tuner, you have to pay a lot. But If you don't need a TV tuner, this v9700 is the best choice you can think.

Strengths: Price; ease of setup; 1080i up-conversion; plays all types of recordables
Weaknesses: None that I can see.
Summary: Great cheap combo DVD/VCR player at a cheap price. HDMI up-conversion is nice. I hooked up the HDMI cable up to my 50" plasma, enabled the HDMI in the setup menu and I was treated to an awesome picture from my regular DVD's. This took less than 10 mins from unpacking to viewing, can't ask for much more! Its not Blue Ray or HD DVD, but its all you need if you don't have a 1080p TV.

Strengths: Combo for both DVD & VCR HDMI Upconverting
Weaknesses: HDMI only works for DVD No Tuner Cannot record DVD to VHS
Summary: I bought this unit to play back standard DVD's on my 50Inch Plasma. The quality through the HDMI cable is great as it can do both 1080i and 720p. However, the HDMI Cable works only for the DVD playback. It does not work for either the VHS or for the Line In. Took me a while to figureout that the only way to watch a VHS tape or the Dish TV was by hooking up the RCA cables separate from the HDMI. Also, you cannot record from the the DVD to VHS.

2 Star ReviewSamsung DVDV9700
Strengths: Easy to set-up, Plays multiple types of DVDs
Weaknesses: Doesn't have HDMI output for VCR
Summary: I bought this product thinking that it would have HDMI output for both the components. There was no mention about the need for RCA or S-video connection for the VCR on the product information on-line. The unit is easy to set-up and works well otherwise. Ability to play different types of DVD media is helpful.

Strengths: Ability to upconvert.
Weaknesses: None for its intended use.
Summary: I needed a VCR (for the countless tapes that I have lying around) and a DVD player for a new, mini entertainment center. Purchasing a dual system made the most sense. After researching the various systems - and there really doesn't appear to be that many -- I settled on this model. I didn't want an inexpensive model (i.e., less than $50) fearing it may be too flimsy. All I really needed it to do was for playback. I haven't recorded any VHS tapes in years. Keep in mind that this machine does NOT record to DVD! Nevertheless, for playback and the ability to connect to the newer, hi-def TVs, this model does the trick.
