Strengths: Fantastic Color/Picture. Online gaming is excellent. Great looking.
Weaknesses: If big remote is a weakness then big remote.
Summary: 2007-09-09 20:22:47 I have not yet recieved My Sharp Aquos LC-42D72U but have done much reasearch and ordered it. My big question was what set the two tv's apart(LC-42D62U & LC-42D72U.) So far it seems to be that the 72U utilizes a 4 wavelenght backlight system as opposed to the 62U's 3 wavelength backlight system. The 4 wavelength system has some obvious advantages. It will have a higher contrast ratio(2000:1 static compared to 1200:1 static). This allows for much deeper blacks and a much more vibrant red. Not only that, three years down the road, when the tv's lighting dims there wont be as much of a color loss with the 4 wavelength system. The wave length can be thought of as a razor used to shave with. A razor with only 3 blades will leave larger gaps(be placed further apart) in a given surface area(42") as opposed to a 4 bladed razor whos blades are closer together within that surface area(42".) The refresh rate is 4ms in the 72U and I believe 6ms in the 62U. Although in a specific setting I believe the 6ms of the 62U can be sped up to 4ms. I hope this bit of information is helpfull since there is a serious lack of information pertaining to the model LC-42D72U. I look forward to receiving my new television in the next 5 days and updating this review. I'll be adding firsthand experience with standard & HD programming as well as online gaming, using the new XBOX 360 Elite.
UPDATE 09-09-2007:
I have been using the Sharp Aquos LC-42D72U for almost two months now. I use Verizon FiOs as my Television and internet provider. The picture is fantastic. The HD programing looks amazing an uncompromised. The picture is bright and still accomplishes true looking colors. The colors are vibrant and deep with no dimming of the picture. The standard definition is great but nothing compaired to HD. I've been gaming online(Halo 2) using the XBOX 360 Elite. The Elite has an HDMI OUTput on it so naturally thats what I use. I Use INput #4(HDMI) on my TV and the picture is fantastic. HDgames look out of this world. I haven't noticed any lag or delay while Online gaming. So far the Aquos 72U is fast, beautiful, and on par with other more costly tv's. I look forward to a new HD/Blueray DVD player so I can push this machine to its limits.
I would recommend this Television to everyone. The Price and Quality is #1.

Strengths: Very bright, good black levels and very sharp for high def broadcasts
Weaknesses: Some defects found, disappointing standard def quality
Summary: This tv has been great. The screen is very bright and the image quality for high def material is awesome. I can't stop watching the high def broadcasts over standard def. I already have one defect that I will have to contact SHARP about. There is a small oval of discoloration on the lower right corner and it's definitely noticeable when light colors are shown on the screen. There are also some dead pixels but from what I read almost every LCD screen has dead pixels, especially the larger the screen. But other than that, the image is very very clear and to me this tv is a very good investment.

Strengths: Excellent quality for the price. Rich color and incredible definition.
Weaknesses: None found yet.
Summary: We upgraded from the 37" inch aquos to the 42" aquos. Are reading lots of reviews we determined we wanted to buy either a Sharp, Sony or Samsung as they have the best reputation. Plasma seems to be on its way out now that LCD can match their popular screen sizes. We ruled out Sony because the prices seem to be a good 25% higher, but we didn't see that you got any better of a product. This left Sharp and Samsung and we already loved our 37" aquos so we stayed with this line. The extra 5" are a nice upgrade but the real difference is we have moved from a 720p to a 1080p and a contrast ratio of 10,000:1 with faster response time. The picture is amazing on our HD channels and HD videos. We have a 1 yr. old and don't get out to the movies much, but it is great to have a little mini movie screen in our living room to enjoy! You will love this unit!

Strengths: 4ms fast response
10,000:1 contrast radio
True 1080p, deep black(for a LCD)
Weaknesses: the remote is bulky and cheap, average sound.
Summary: It took me several weeks to decide between this one, and a Samsung Model. Works flawlessly on 1080p with a PS3,it makes my 20 inch LCD monitor look like a baby. As a gamer, i definitely recommend it.

Strengths: Image quality and electronic interfaces.
Weaknesses: None serious since I expected regular TV to look poor compared to HD; the piano black finish shows the dust, if you must know.
Summary: I spent some research time before leaping into HD. I was really ignorant so read alot, got Consumer Reports, the whole bit. Everybody knew more than me. Well the specs were impressive (almost bought the 62U model first), then stumbled over the 72U. Saw the Toshiba and Sony models (close seconds). Got an HD DVD (Toshiba A20 1080p upconvert) to get max playback from regular DVDs as well as HD (bet against the Blu-Ray). Am totally satisfied! I do run a 5.1 surround sound audio system for the movies and HD-TV, but the regular speakers are fine for routine use.
I have made very few mods to the factory video settings, although there are plenty of websites that will drive you loopy with recommendations. There are many settings to mess with, but I am a simple guy and this display is wonderful out of the box (slightly blue (cool in AV terms) but easily "warmed up")!
I purchased online and had a flawless delivery; no imperfections; great price. In fact, the prices today are higher than when I bought in May 2007.

Strengths: 42" Great Picture, intuitive remote, easy install
Weaknesses: Sound projection to sides?
Summary: Started shopping for our first flat panel with a pre-determination that plasma technology was going to be the winner. After a better understanding of glare issues with plasma decided to go LCD....but then had to figure out which brand and model. Visited Big Box and specialty audio/video retailers, learned about the brands and decided to go with Sharp...the built in QAM tuner was one of the selling points, but the great picture and stylish case were the deciding factors. Care should be taken when purchasing as there can be two to four (possibly even more) models being sold at retail (www.sharpusa.com) shows three different models with specification and release date data and Sharp has slightly different models at stores such as Cosco and BJ's. Make sure you understand which model you are pricing. Ultimately, I purchased this on-line and had no problems whatsoever with the purchase. Unit is hanging on the wall of our exercise room and works great (easty to hang, but somewhat difficult to plug in the various components...but when done, no wires can be seen). I added a Sennheiser wireless headphone so that I can work out without having the TV blasting. The unit has plenty of connection options, more than I will ever use. Only negative that I can comment on is that the sound seems to project to the sides rather than straight out and makes some dialog a bit hard to understand. Quality of the sound is very good, just the forward projection....and this might just be an issue of the room and placement. The default color settings are just fine, no additional tweaking seems necessary. A great TV.

Strengths: High native contrast ratio 2000:1 is a big plus. Very sharp pictures even when using an upconvert 1080P dvd players.
Weaknesses: Remote control looks and feels fragile. Speaker output is too weak.
Summary: I have this SHARP AQUOS 42" for 14 days. I have attached an HD antenna to receive local HD and SD broadcast. The picture quality is amazing. Prior to purchasing this LCD I had compared the specs of other mfr: Sony, Samsung, LG and Toshiba. You will get the most bang for the buck if you select this TV. Again the only things I don't like so far is the remote control feel, looks and functionality. For example I cannot find the way to easily delete (Analog) channels directly from a push of a single button. The output of the speaker is not as good as I like. I had to increase the volume almost to the max to get a decent sound out of this TV. Other than those 2 issues I think this is a great HDTV.

Strengths: Flawless image
Weaknesses: Speakers are a little weak and I do not prefer the TV's remote control button configuration.
Summary: This TV was purchased through an website. It arrived damaged (motherboard connections) and I called the Sharp Tech Support right away. The next day their repair guy arrived on time and checked out the TV. Confirmed it was not operating correctly and took the TV for repair. Repair time took 5 days and they re-delivered it to my residence. It's been perfect ever since and Sharp conducted a follow-up phone call and mailing to see if the repairs were made correctly and if I need any further assistance. I must say I was pretty bummed the TV arrived dead, but I am extremely pleased with the way that Sharp handled the repairs and customer care. Since I got it back from the repair shop, the TV image has looked awesome. I use an Oppo upconverting DVD player (up to 1080p) and I have a Sony PlayStation 3 that plays the BluRay discs.
The picture quality is better on the BluRay discs than the upconverted DVDs, but only by a small margin. I would recommend the purchase of the 1080p upconverting DVD player and enjoy this TV for it's fantastic image and wait for the HD wars to settle out.
Also, since the onboard speakers are a little weak I would recommend a surround sound system for a better movie watching experience.

Strengths: Great HD picture and very deep blacks. This unit has much to offer at a great price.
Weaknesses: The remote feels cheap. There no buttons on the TV to operate the menus; Better not lose the remote.
Summary: I spent at least 6 weeks researching what brand of LCD TV that I would purchase. At first I was going to purchase Sony XBR2 or 3, 40”. I just thought that Sony would have the best picture and quality. But as I did my research both online and at various electronic stores, it became apparent that many of the brands available seemed to have the same or better picture and specs than the Sony for less money.
Trying to pick out a TV by viewing it at an electronics store is like buying a used car from Honest John’s Used Car Emporium and Lingerie. No cash, no credit, no problem. My wife and I would stand there and ask each other which one looked the best. They all looked good in the stores. So I reverted to online reviews and manufacturer specs. The only problem was that the LC-42D72U was so new that there were not many reviews to go by. Even Sharp’s website did not have any information on their product. I did contact Sharp about that and they did inform me that their website was not up to date. But there were plenty of reviews on the LC-42D62U model. I did manage to located manuals online for the D72 and the D62 models for comparison.
I was impressed with the specs of the Sharp Aquos D72 as compared to the other brands, especially the 4ms response time. Also, CR rated the D62 model just as good as the Sony XBR2. Since the D72 supposedly has slightly better specs that the D62 model, I felt that I could save $500 and go with the Sharp Aquos.
This Sharp Aquos TV has turned out to be a gem. It has all the features, 1080p, 2 HDMI inputs, DVI, etc… The colors are as good as any other LCD TV we have seen. The high definition picture is great. The blacks are among the best that we have seen in a LCD TV. The standard definition picture is of good quality. The Sharp Aquos speakers are a little lacking in the quality of sound. But they are adequate.
The initial setup was easy. For this day and age the manual that comes with the TV is actually fairly good.
Overall we are very satisfied with the performance of this HDTV. So far the TV has performed flawlessly. Only time will tell if Sharp has put enough engineering and quality into their product so that it performs to the same standards in the future. That’s my real test of a great product.

Strengths: Picture quality
Sleek black design
Weaknesses: Bulky remote
Summary: This is an excellent TV. I decided to purchase it after comparing the TV with Samsung and Sony models. The picture on the Samsung models was not as impressive as the Sharp television. The Sony XBR2 had a slightly better picture, but cost several hundred dollars more. Overall I am very impressed the picture quality and would recommend this TV to anyone without hesitation.
