Strengths: Very lightweight easy to carry DSLR camera. Great battery life. Large bright color LCD on back. Auto exposure or many varied auto programs to assist you in getting the right exposue!
Weaknesses: Can only use Nikon AF-S lenses for auto focus as motor is built into the lens. If you don't have existing lenses this really is not a problem. Wish the LCD had some sort of protective cover.
Summary: 2007-06-05 10:14:41 This is my first DSLR camera and what a great choice. I moved over from a point and shoot Pentax. The quality of images is superb. The D40X is a little overwhelming at first if you have not used a DSLR before. I also bought a Blue Crane DVD for the D40 which was very useful, almost a personal tutor to get you started. The D40X is small and light even with an 18-135mm lens which was important to me as I travel alot and did not want a suit case size camera bag. The camera can be used as a point and shot in auto mode but that takes the fun out of it. Nikon also gives you portrait, night, sports, landscape and closeup auto modes to help get perfect pics as well as giving you the opportunity to do manual exposures and shutter and aperture priority shooting so you can be creative and grow with the camera. Some people call this a baby Nikon making it sound like it is a black sheep - on the contrary it is fun, challenging and takes great images. I also bought the ML-L3 wireless remote which works great for self portraits or allowing me to be in the shot as well. And for bounce flash the ultra small Nikon SB-400 Speedlight which really compliments the D40X. I wish I could squeeze the budget for an 18-200mm VR lens so I could use the Vibration Reduction but I am very happy with the 18-135mm which gives me a great range of focal length of wide angle and closeup shots. As a newbie the camera was overwhelming the first little while but the cure was to just try shooting and experimenting and don't let people tell you it is a toy Nikon - you still need to be able to compose a photograph no matter what camera you use.

In summary, this is a GREAT first time DSLR! Why the D40X instead of a D40? Well 10 megapixels versus 6 megapixels. While that is not enough reason to buy a camera, I tend to crop a lot and do large prints so the extra pixels are appreciated. If you don't need this, save about $200 and by the D40 as the cameras are almost identical. Put the savings toward another lens.

For my first DSLR I am a very happy camper. Got to go take pictures now...

Strengths: Very easy to use, smaller and lighter than others, kit 9424 comes with a versatile 18 to 135 mm autofocus lens. Eliminates shutter lag found in pocket or non-SLR digital cameras
Weaknesses: Excellent for amateurs & hobbists; get a spare batterys or model D80 if you're a pro; this has a limited array of lenses and fewer features, focus zones and framse per second than the D-80
Summary:

Nikon packed this unit with features. It has the same resolution and can take many of the lenses as the D-80. Don't confuse this with the D40 as that has lower resolution.

Check the Nikon site for compatibility with your existing lenses as not all will work. Autofocus lenses have to have the motor in the lens as the body doesn't have one.

Nikon has an excellent tutorial on-line and a CD you can buy. I've heard their 1-day classes are awesome and can't wait to have one in my area soon.

The unit comes with a free trial of Nikon's photo editing software which I've not yet tried but heard from others that it rivals many packages.

Strengths: 18-135 Lens, high resolution, quality of images
Weaknesses: Expensive, heavy
Summary: This is great semi-professional camera. The pictures quality is very high, much higher then regular pocket cameras. No such things as "red eyes" (canon problem). 18-135 lens makes a great deal - you don't have to carry 2 lenses one for zoom and one wide angel. This lens is exactly what beginner need. Still, this camera is pretty heavy, which makes is difficult to carry on outdoor adventures and backpacking trips. But it is the price that one has to pay for such a high quality pictures.
