3 Star ReviewGood Printer for the Price!
Strengths: Just the right functions for the Price. HP is a respected brand in printing.
Weaknesses: No built in networking. Paper Jammed once. Ink Smears. Printer is a little noisier than expected.
Summary: For the price, this printer is not all that bad. It prints fast, and the quality is OK. It is jammed packed w/ features including ADF, Fax, Scan, and Copy. It has speed dial as well. The new Vivera ink cartridges are supposed to print better and fade less. I have however, had some pages smear on me. It has also jammed on me once, but that was easily fixed. The printer does make loud noises when printing, but nothing too unbearable. I would recommend this printer for the home user or home small business user. I do however believe that Canons are superior, but also a little bit more pricey.

Strengths: Clear, sharp professional document printing. Excellent copying and scanning.
Weaknesses: No user manual for product features.
Summary: This is an excellent all-in-one for the entry level home or business use. None of the features were compromised. The document printing is exceptional. Scanner can be used either by direct feed or using the flat bed. User friendly for both beginner and expert users.

1 Star ReviewHP Officejet J5780
Strengths: Stand alone scanner is great as a paperweight, when not connected to a new HP computer
Weaknesses: No Manual, no HP support solutions.
Summary: Nothing but difficulties with this 'all in one'. Many people including me, had had purchased a New HP computer with Vista. Installed the software for the HP J5780. No problem. Then unfortunately had to restore my computer to factory settings, and now the disk for the HP J5780 hangs at 96%. This software will not nstall fully from a disk. This is not an uncommon problem. Many, many people are unhappy with this all in one. Purchase something else, that is more dependable. Buyer Beware....

3 Star ReviewHP OfficeJet J5780 AIO
Strengths: Setup is relatively easy. Front panel is nice and easy to use
Weaknesses: Need to understand printer settings and printer is noisy
Summary: Print quality is only good when you put it on Best quality setting. Black and white copies good, color copies a bit faded comparing original. Fax works well. Overall for the money a decent printer.

Strengths: fast, quality print, fax
Weaknesses: ink problem
Summary: I love my new multifunction. Faxing multiple pages is so easy with the automatic document feeder. The only issue I have found is that I went through my black ink cartridge VERY quickly and because the machine is so new, there are no generics on the market yet, so you have to buy the HP brand. I do a lot of printing, so it could get expensive if I have to replace often. I replaced it with a 74XL and am waiting to see how it holds up.

Strengths: Convenient buttons for easy access to most functions; auto document feeder; quality software included; HP reputation.
Weaknesses: Rather noisy; takes a long time to begin copying first page; document feeder tends to skew the page when copying/scanning; little printed documentation.
Summary: I considered comparably priced and featured printers from HP, Dell, Epson and Canon before deciding on the HP Officejet J5780. It seemed to have the best features for the price.

I have not been disappointed. It was very easy to unbox, setup and install with Windows XP. It installs additional software including the drivers, HP Photosmart Essential, HP Software Update, HP Product Support, OCR software and HP Solution Center. The HP Solution Center software allows you to run functions such as scanning and faxing as well as changing printer and other settings.

In general it is easy to use. There are buttons on the front panel to send faxes, store frequently used numbers, copy and scan. There is a small display to display status messages and can be used to set options. The auto document feeder is convenient for copying and faxing, though I have had issues where the paper is skewed a bit and not quite straight on the output copy. The auto document feeder can be lifted up to allow use as a flat bed scanner for copying books, etc.

The printer seems to take a relatively long time to print the first page and to begin copying. When copying it will feed the first sheet and then wait for 15 seconds or so before continuing. Once it starts printing it prints quickly.

Color copies and prints come out fine, though the black ink does come out smeared fairly often. The ink cartridges that come with the printer are smaller than normal and you will go through them fairly quickly. Be sure to order new cartridges soon.

I am not a heavy OCR user, though I did test scanning a document with pictures and various fonts to a Word document. The results were good (but not excellent, though the OCR software is a "light" version).

In summary, this is a good all-in-one unit for home or a home office setup.
