Strengths: Small, thin, lightweight, no loose cap, big drive
Weaknesses: flimsy look and feel
Summary: 2008-01-09 21:07:26 I've held out for a long time before I finally made the leap to purchase this drive. I wanted a good price with a big drive space. I bought this at Staples for $70. So this little thing fit the bill perfectly!
I must admit that this is the first USB stick I actually bought, the other stick I had was a IBM 256mb that I got for free (it worked well, but I definately needed more space).
STRENGTHS:
This USB stick holds everything I need it to. It takes about 11-12 minutes to install 5 gigs. I think that's pretty quick. I haven't used the compression file that comes with it. I haven't found the need to. But it comes in handy if the need should arise.
The stick is very lightweight and thin. I especially love the retractable head part. Don't have to worry about losing the cap at all. The part where you push the head out lights up green when you stick it into the USB port. Nice way to let you know it's in use.
There's also a place in the other end of the stick where you could tie a cord and let it hang around your neck. Good to have if I ever need that feature.
WEAKNESS:
The only thing I don't like about this drive is the flimsy outer covering. I'm surprised SONY made it so cheap looking. Especially for the amount they're charging, you'd think it'd be more sturdy. But that may the reason why it's so lightweight too. But if you ask me, I'd rather carry around a little more weight and have a sturdier USB stick.
All-in-all, great USB drive, I recommend it!

it looks good, but it's a bit slow
Strengths: retractable, no cap, slim, very light, stylish design
Weaknesses: kind of slow ....
Summary: I have the Sony 8GB and a Patriot 16 GB flash drives. The Patriot is much faster (and about same price for double the memory). The only thing that I really love about the Sony is its retractable capabilities.

Strengths: fast and good looks
Weaknesses: easy to scrath, no activity light
Summary: The first thing about this drive is the huge 8Gig space. I bought this to replace all the 1gig drives I carry around and it does the job well. I have copies movies on it and was able to play them from the drive without any lag on flights. It does hold a lot of data and will be a drive you will never replace in a long time. This drive is really fast and works great. I did notice a lot of scratches in a few days of use and also there is no activity light on it. Sony could have done better with a rubberised feel and a better activity light on the rear of the drive. But its a great drive none the less.

Strengths: Speedy, retractable USB port, lots of space
Weaknesses: A bit big, weak casing
Summary: This drive has served me well for two months; it's nice and fast, and the capless design is a plus. The drive is light and the case feels week, and it's larger than others, but you can't have it all.

Strengths: Retractable USB connector, speed is great for sustained writes and fair for lots of small writes, nice black finish, lanyard hook, data compression software included.
Weaknesses: Slower than my SanDisk Cruzer Micro, large and bulky, plastic USB port switch on side sticks out too far and fell off once.
Summary: I've used this flash drive extensively for all my important data over the past three months, and it's held up well, with no corruption so far. 8GB is a lot of space to work with, and it's served nicely for impressing friends and storing my important photos, school work, etc. Read speed is fast, as is writing a few large files (10+ MB each), though copying over a lot of small text documents is fairly slow.
..... I don't like how the current generation of capless USB flash drives, including this one, are so wide and bulky. I can use two Sony MicroVault drives on the computers at the library, but the USB ports are next to each other, and the switch to retract the port that is on the side of each drive sticks out too far. The drives are pushed apart, stressing the USB connectors. Using this drive along-side one of the current, wider SanDisk Cruzer Micros isn't even an option. I'd prefer a nice capped design that was smaller, like the white Kingston DataTravelers (the new black ones, with the retractable connectors, are once again too big). The old SanDisk Cruzer Micros were good too, but the cap wouldn't fit on the back. We don't put up with that on pens; why do we tolerate it on flash drives?
..... The white switch for the USB port is flimsy, and fell off once. I clicked it back in place on the drive, but when it falls off and I lose it, the drive will be hard to use. And why is this drive so huge, anyway? For being three inches long (with the USB port extended), you'd think it's some sort of MP3 player/flash drive/voice recorder, but no. For the eight gigabytes of space it is tolerable, but unless you're getting this cheaply (~$50), go for something else.
..... I haven't used the data compression software included, as I hear it slows the drive down a lot, and most of what I have is already compressed (JPEGs, MP3s, ZIP archives). Don't think it's going to turn your 8GB drive into a monster 24GB drive as Sony proclaims, as you don't have 24GB of the stuff that can be compressed that well anyway (text, Microsoft Word, PDF, and HTML documents, uncompressed TIFF and .BMP images, .WAV audio, and the like). More likely, the space-hogger is JPEGs, MP3s (or equivalent), and video, and trying to compress them further will just slow you down.
..... I recommend the drive for reliability and just working (no U3 software to deal with), despite the above issues.

Strengths: very fast data transfer, good quality
Weaknesses: too big
Summary: This is one of best 8GB flash drive currently available in the market.
The best value for its storage capacity and high transfer rate.
You can always carry around all your important files right in your pocket.
I'm very pleased with this product so far, I haven't had any problems.
I will definitively recommend this "sleek design" USB Flash Drive to my friends.

Strengths: Easy to use, easy to install and no need to worry about the cap
Weaknesses: Still too expensive
Summary: This sony Flash Drive is quite good working under both WinXP and Vista, easy to install and no need to worry about losing the cap (with the retractable USB connector). But the price of it is still too expensive compared to other smaller storage devices (like 2G and 4G flash drive). But the outside black plastic part is kind of cheap, not shiny.
