Sony Vaio VGX-XL3 Home Theater PC
Strengths: Blu-ray disc recorder compatible with DVD and CD formats. HDMI connection supports use of Home Theater receiver/amplifier. Quiet cooling system fan.
Weaknesses: Graphics card does not support Sony HDTV native resolutions. CableCard not implemented for On Demand and interactive programming. No Bluetooth connection available.
Summary: This is a compact and relatively quiet Home Theater PC that still needs many improvements. Fan noise is low, but hard drive can be heard from the sofa. The only resolutions available for Sony HDTV are 1176x664 for 720p format and 1768x992 for 1080i format, resulting in black borders around the screen. This also becomes an issue with fonts, which are not displayed really sharp. Standard Definition TV looks great because of the digital receiver, but a single tuner makes impossible to record a program while watching other. Premium movie channels can be watched, but all interactive programming, including On Demand, is not enabled. The wireless network card driver needs to be updated to solve signal strength issue, but even after updating driver and software, there are association issues with wireless router, resulting in intermittent connection. Overall, we enjoy using this machine in the family room, but the above issues are sometimes frustrating.
