Strengths: 1080i 60fps HD video, HDMI output, 4.0MP still pictures, 10x optical zoom, image stabilization.
Weaknesses: HiDef recording time per disc. Low light recording.
Summary: This is an awesome HiDef camcorder. I purchased a 3 pack of filters to go along with it and I've been really impressed with the picture quality. The colors are vivid and bright. As with most HiDef camcorders, low light situations are grainy, so I'll probably invest in a lamp to attach to the accessory shoe on top of the camcorder.

I wish the miniDVDs would hold more video: 15 to 35 minutes HiDef recording depending on quality. It has 4 HD quality settings(all look great). Or 30 minutes to an hour if you use dual layer DVDs. Much longer record times for Standard Def, but I bought this for HiDef.

Everything considered this camera is well worth the money (I found a deal online for a new UX5, 5 RW discs, 3 lens filters, 5 hr battery and rapid charger all for less than $800!!).

Strengths: High Def, Great Pictures, 4MP Still camera, Great looks, Ease of use
Weaknesses: only about 15 mins of recording in HD mode on normal DVD, Editing not so easy in AVCHD format, Slow recording start, Can't record to Memory Stick
Summary: I just bought this camcorder in a very good deal and so far really impressed with this. Eventhough its about an year old model but the picture and video quality is comparable to the one of the latest models available in the market today. The recording time in HiDef mode is only about 15 mins but recording in non HiDef mode gives an extra room. Disc should be finalized before it could be seen anywhere else. Low light picture quality is not very great but the use of the external flash gives it a better look. Still camera picture quality is awsome. I would highly recommend this camcorder to all.

Strengths: HD/Std. selectable. Regular Mini DVD Media and Memory card capable. Light weight. Carl Zeiss lens. Touch screen. SONY!!!
Weaknesses: DVD is not practical for lengthy filming in HD. However, is typical otherwise. I am not a real fan of Sony proprietary memory...
Summary: Well, I was at Circuit City after seeing that they are discontinuing this model for a newer one (so what's so new???). However, this model is just several months old. They were selling these for $349 until they ran out of them (they were nearly $1,000 when released). However, I got the last one and they had already taken it out of their system...they sold it to me for $189! This is a great HiDef camcorder and I was originally considering the Panasonic equivalent that has also gone down in price since I do like SD cards better, have many of them and they are more universally accepted. However, this is alot lighter and the price was right. The picture quality is terrific. The zoom is SILENT! I am not having the batery problem that another reviewer indicated and perhaps they got a bad one...the battery that comes with it was a NP-FH60. The mini DVDs are really universal in that you can pop them into any standard DVD player for a 30 minute video...in high def, you cut that in half. But there is always the memory card slot and I have seen these cards now go to 32 GB if you want to spend more than the camera itself...so capacity can be compensated by the alternative media, hence 'hybrid.'

Speaking of which, it has 4 MP HD quality setting for photographs which is damn good for a camcorder. Did I mention it records in Dolby 5.1?

Poor you if you spend the $800 or so that one of the other reviewers paid since you can find these relatively reasonable since the models constantly change...

Strengths: value
Weaknesses: battery life
Summary: Video quality is amazing. Can't say anything about the picture quality, I don't think many people have even tried taking one. The things I don't like - 1. minidvd at highest quality is about 15-18 min. 2. fully charged battery last a little over an hour. The same battery lasts about 4hr in minidv camcorders. 3. in order to play hd video you have to have bluray (or you can play it in through camcorder). you can record your video in sd, but that's not the reason you are getting this camcorder. On the positive side - this camcorder can be had for under $500.
