Sony tried, but no home run here
Strengths: Fairly intuitive initial set up, but recommend reading manual carefully for non-tech types. Unit is geared to the consumer, so staying with the "auto" functions are the best bet on this model.
Weaknesses: The picture is somewhat grainy for this CCD level. Initializing the DVD mini disc is excessively lengthy, but worse is the time to "finalize" the disk after shooting.
Summary: For the beginner, this cam is "OK". The picture is grainy for a higher end CCD. Accessory lenses are exorbitantly priced, as are most accessories. Initial formatting of the mini DVD disc is less than intuitive - read manual, but also check with someone who knows about different formatting of disks if you are not a "tech" type. A big drawback was the amount of time to "finalize" the mini-DVD. It appeared that the process took, minute by minute, as much time as the video minutes you shot on the movie - in my opinion WAY too long! Though manual says PC platform, my Mac OS X "iDVD" had no trouble playing back a DVD-RW (Maxell brand), but I didn't try any editing anything, so we will see. Touch screen controls need little fingers for precise placement to activate. Replaying some scenes just shot to check the audio revealed an extraordinarily poor audio feedback from the cam speaker, BUT play back on a TV, PC etc was quite good for a small built in Dolby mic. All in all, I'd probably go with the similarly priced JVC for about the same money, but in my case I hit a great discount so what can I say. I'm not a pro and "it'll do for now 'til I get serious and go HiDef.
