Strengths: Price, Overall Performance, Aesthetics
Weaknesses: Minor Speaker Pops, No Way To "Power Off" Using The Remote, Subwoofer Outputs A Little More Than Low Frequencies
Summary: 2005-06-01 13:35:32 This is my first home theater purchase and I am very pleased. I purchased the DP-1950 for $69.99 and for that price I received a very good product. The DP-1950 isn't the loudest home theater system you can buy, but it certainly is not the quietest either. The sound is very clear, at low or high volumes, and the Dolby Digital 5.1 is very satisfactory. The unit and speakers themselves come in a silver finish which will fit in with most any motif.
There are some minor annoyances I found but nothing that should really detract from the overall product itself. The speakers pop whenever you turn the unit on/off and during the title changes of a DVD. Title changes, as I describe them, are when you go from the "Previews" to the "Menu" to the "Copyright" warning and then into the movie itself. You'll get a pop between each one of those. During the movie however, when the chapters are changing, there are no pops.
Also, the remote that is included does not have a power button. The unit turns on via a button on the front and it turns off via that same button. Finally, the subwoofer does shell out some solid bass but also a little extra sound as well. If you listen close enough you can make out some muffled dialog and other high frequency sounds coming from the woofer. These are very low and hardly noticeable but still present.
Again, all just minor annoyances but ones that I can accept given the price. The unit also comes with a radio tuner and the ability to play compact discs along with other media. I personally do not use it for that purpose, but I did test both when I first setup the system and they worked fine.
If you're looking for a high-end home theater system, this is obviously not for you. But if you're looking for something to fill the void until you can afford one, I would definitely consider this product. There's no point in wasting your money on a low-to-mid-level that goes for $100-$200 more when you know you'll be replacing it later on down the road for something more high-quality. The DP-1950 will give you the same low-to-mid-level performance for half the price as long as you can deal with the minor issues that it has. This is absolutely a great buy for the budget consumer.
