Strengths: Excellent Quality Made In Japan Great protection for the front element Improved contrast in bright sunlight
Weaknesses: None so far
Summary: This is genuine canon, made in Japan. Although it's appears to be only a piece of plastic, it is very essential if you are serious about photography under bright sunlight. Look at strengths above, there is no reason not to have one. I have a Hoya multi coated filter on my lens and this hood still fits perfectly. I love the dual protection. You already spend about a grand on your lens, don't be cheap on the lens hood. Get the best, Get Canon ^_^ I hightly recommend this product.

3 Star ReviewBIG
Strengths: It works!!!
Weaknesses: BIG & Expensive
Summary: I finally got around to picking this hood up for my 17-55mm lens. It's really big, so I'm only using it during sunny days. For the night it's too cumbersome for me & gets in the way while zooming. Canon should think about enclosing this with the lens. At ~$45 it's pretty expensive for a piece of plastic!

Strengths: Works on multiple Canon lenses, can be mounted in reverse for easy storage.
Weaknesses: Expensive
Summary: I try to protect all of my lenses from damage, but I so far have refused to protect them with lens filters. I just don't like the idea of adding another piece of glass that can potentially affect photos in a negative manner. Instead, I prefer to keep hoods on all of my lenses when they are in use. So far, this has worked well for me when combined with careful use of my equipment. With added protection and a reduction of lens flare, you really can't go wrong with putting a hood on any of your lenses, and this hood is no exception.

I bought this to replace the stock hood which I lost for my Canon 17-40 f/4.0L lens. With this hood on my lens and a 1.6x crop body like my 40D, there's no vignetting to worry about and the protection is much improved. Also, this lens isn't as wide as the stock 17-40, making it easier to store.
