Strengths: Has all of the proper inputs and the controls are easy to use.
Weaknesses: Would like to have access to bass and treble adjustments that are now configured into preset programs.
Summary: I purchased this unit knowing its strength and weaknesses and still found it to be a very good value. I would recommend its purchase. I tried 6 different pairs of speakers with it and found that the low end speakers sound so close to the high end speakers that we were able to purchase the low end speakers. Speaker prices we were looking at varied from $200 a pair to $600 a pair.

Strengths: Lots of inputs, great sound
Weaknesses: Poor FM antenna provided, hard to get speaker wires to stay in without banana clips
Summary: My husband and I were looking to upgrade a 10 year old JVC receiver. After doing a lot of research, we decided to stick with the JVC brand and have not been disappointed. This unit has a lot of inputs - we have a DVD player, satellite dish, TV, Playstation2, and Gamecube all hooked to the system, and could still put more. It also has the capability for 6.1 surround sound speakers, has 5 digital inputs (4 optical and 1 coaxial, features which few units have. The only weaknesses are the FM antenna that is provided (pretty puny and the fact that unless you purchase banana clips for speaker wires, you really have to be sure you get the inputs down tight, or the wires pop out. Overall, though, this unit gets 2 thumbs up!

Strengths: Easy set up, radio frequence remote, host of features, power
Weaknesses: A bit bulky (deeper than my other components)
Summary: I was specifically looking for a low-to-mid priced receiver to control two sets of speakers in different rooms, and it became clear that the RX-8040B was the optimal choice. The two features that really sold me are (1) the RF remote (instead of infrared), and (2) the ability to set a 5-band EQ for each input. I'm sure one day I'll graduate to a surround-sound setup, and this receiver looks like it'll still be able to handle the job. There are so many features, and so much control over the sound, I feel like I lucked out finding this. Way to go, JVC!
