Strengths: 1. HD (720p, 1080i) programs look great. 2. Standard and DVD programs (420i and 420p) also look great. 3. Lots of inputs. 4. Easy to use remote. 5. PIP and POP (side-by-side 6. Quiet operation
Weaknesses: 1. During dark scenes, hard to differentiate among shades of black to see what is going on.
Summary: Very pleased with HDTV.

I use it for viewing over the air programming. The tuner is excellent and picks up all of our local digitally broadcast programs.

The remote permits easy access to plethora of inputs. In addition to standard viewing modes (e.g., movie or sports), a custom mode can be created for each input. For example, you may choose to lower the brightness.

The TV is silent; I have not noticed any distracting noises.

50" is big. A relative, sitting 9 feet away from the screen, says it is like sitting in the middle of a movie theater. For him, it was too big because he prefers to sit in the back.

My initial reaction was that it might be too big, also. However, after watching it for a few weeks, I don't think I would be happy with anything smaller. It's a very different experience than watching our old 32" Sony.

I have not yet done so, but I will probably purchase an extended warranty through Visa Warranty Manager. The price is much less than purchasing through the electronics store or Vizio.

Strengths: Wonderfully sharp, clear picture. Picture quality better than all LCDs and 90% of all Plasmas sampled in retail outlets prior to purchase. PLASMA ROCKS!!
Weaknesses: Only one HDMI but for the price, who cares.
Summary: With a bit of TLC handling, we were able to get it in the Explorer. Once home, install & setup were a breeze. Normally don't do this, but extended warranty is recommended to protect your investment. And you can pickup a good, second, compatible backlit remote from most electronics retailers. My teenagers love it and have already had WOW & Wii get-togethers with many of their friends. The Wii & wireless hookup even lets us check e-mail on the new tube. (LARGE print is great)

Strengths: crystal clear atsc reception. Accurate, vibrant, and detailed colors. abundant selection of connections, and very affordable prices.
Weaknesses: Noisy fan, lacks cablecard, non-illuminated remote
Summary: 2007-05-18 13:01:33 Same great picture as the original Vizio 50" plama (P50HDM) but with additions of ATSC Tuner. This is an excellent plasma TV for the price. Vizio might not be as well known in the plasma tv business as Pioneer or Sony, but don't be afraid. I've used the older P50HDM over 11 month and it was a beautiful set. I replaced the older set with this new one because of the addition of atsc tuners. This plasma has more features than any other plasma in its price class. The Faroudja image processor makes the picture look incredible.

Highly recommended.

Some updates regarding transporting this TV yourself:

The dimension of the box is 17"W x 56"L x 40"H. Weighs 130lbs. The box adds height to the already tall unit. You will not be able to fit it in any suvs. So pickup truck is probably your best bet. And under no circumstances should you lay down a plasma during transport. It should be fully erect and held tight so it doesn't sway during transport.

I had to use a freight truck (borrowed from my office) to pick up my P50HDTV from Circuit City because my local store only does pickup order on this tv. The unit is heavy too. About as heavy as the original P50HDM (125+lbs) You'll need 2 able-bodied adult to carry this thing.

I kinda like my tvs heavy rather than light. It's like receivers, you don't want to buy a amp that can be easily picked up. The heavier the better.

More Updates regarding the unit itself:

There's a slight audio-related buzzing in some of the original vizio 50" (P50HDM) It was a problem shared with many owners of the tv. My unit had it. The symptom comes and goes at a irregular time. I heard it mostly when I had my pc speaker cable connected into the vizio. The noise sounds almost like the result of a short originating from somewhere in the back of the tv. I was never able to find the origin or cause, but the noise eventually went away (6 months after I bought the unit).

After setting up this new P50HDTV, I have listened carefully to the tv's sounds and so far haven't found the buzzing sound that plagued my older unit. However, if yours does exbihit the buzzing sound, as long as the noise doesn't increase in frequency and volume over time, I would just ignore it. Because it will most likely fade away after the unit's had properly broken in.

Btw, does anyone know how to update the firmware on this vizio (P50HDTV10A)?

1 Star Reviewp50HDM 50" Plasma
Strengths: Great when it works
Weaknesses: It no longer works
Summary: I bought my vizio in Jan of 2006. Yesterday I would have wrote an awsome review because I was completely satisfied but tonight my Vizio Plasma stopped working. I heard two loud pops and the picture went blank. After searching the web for answers I found that many, many people had the same experience that I had. There is a fatal flaw in these TV's that cost big bucks to fix if your warrenty is up. I paid $2600 just over two years ago so I figure that I rented this Plasma for $100 per month. And now I will buy a better known brand. Good luck to all of you who have one but don't forget to update your review in about two years when yours stops working. I recommend your try to return it before your warrenty expires and buy a better on.

Strengths: Quality of Picture for the price. You will not find a better quality picture for the price range. Several Connection options avaliable
Weaknesses: No Cable Card Slot, but what do you expect considering the price of the unit. Speakers are not detachable.
Summary: Considering the Picture quality and plenty of connections, the value for your dollar is outstanding. The Vizio P50HDTV 50-inch plasma is the best value in its class. We considered several models from other manufactures and this was clearly the correct choice for us.

Strengths: Assortment of inputs, numerous picture adjustments, color processor, easy to navigate and understand menu Vizio website has lots of help info and tech support is open on weekends by phone.
Weaknesses: silver speakers on bottom would have been better in black imho. Waranty service in my area requires set be sent off unless I purchased the add on in home plan.
Summary: Vizio website has lots of help info and tech support is open on weekends by phone. The picture adjustments allow you to achive virtually anything you want. I caught Circuit City adjusting the picture settings horrible and trying to upsell me on antother set. After I adjusted it instore the picture was as good as any other on display. If you do not let the price and brand play tricks on your mind (or the salesman) there was no better choice for me and I researched and looked at dozens, unless price is no consideration and you need your freinds to be impressed with the Pioneer Elite brand. There is a reason this set ranks high on every independent rating/value list.

Strengths: Excellent image quality, a ton of inputs including 2 HDMI and RGB, Faroudja processor, great built in sound, price!
Weaknesses: The only weakness I've found thus far is the shiny frame. This can catch a glare if the lights are on. I am able to look past this because of the price savings.
Summary: This is an awesome plasma TV for the price. Don't be fooled by the 'unknown' brand name. This plasma has more features than any other plasma in its price class. The Faroudja image processor makes the picture look incredible. I highly recommend.

Strengths: superior quality for the money
Weaknesses: remote code too new for my cable system, have to use 2 remotes
Summary: My brother paid $1100.00 more for his lg and this has a better picture and here's the kicker he has an hdmi cable and I don't. I brought it home 3 weeks ago plugged it in and have been blown away since. I paid less than $1500.00 for this set. This tv is the best value in 50" plasma hands down!!!!!!!!!

Strengths: Excellent quality sound, good picture
Weaknesses: the remote control is not illumiated.
Summary: 2007-04-03 21:54:56 The thing I like the most about this product is that it has an excellent value price. It has excellent sounds, good picture, and the weakness is that its remote control is not illuminate, so it is very hard to see in the dark.

Strengths: Picture, sound, and overal experience.
Weaknesses: Remote control design, weight, and absence of any input socets upfront.
Summary: Even thought I rated the picture quality as strength, it has an annoying flow. It's the High Definition video size. My previous TV was able to stretch the picture to fill the entire screen; however, this model seem doesn't have that useful function. It especially noticeable, when the local news switches from the full screen broadcast to the reduced size within one program from comment to comment. The manufacturer should update that with their next software patch.

1 Star ReviewThis TV is junk
Strengths: good picture for first 18 months
Weaknesses: tv will quit working in under 2 years
Summary: We bought our tv in March of 08, yesterday i was watching tv and i heard a loud pop and then all of a sudden the picture and sound no longer work. The repairs are gonna cost almost as much as a new set. Vizio knows that this happens, but they are not willing to refund or replace. Never buy anything from Vizio!!!!!

Strengths: Nice picture, sound system, strong functions and easy to set up
Weaknesses: I did not find a black tv set,but it is not a big deal
Summary: I have been looking for a while and what a deal it was cost me $1250.00. I had this TV a couple of months. Very satisfied. Much better picture and sound system than a lot of similar yet higher priced sets.

Strengths: Looks Great! Great picture quality and sound and it didn't break my budget.
Weaknesses: So far, none.
Summary: After a month-long search of on-line and in-store deals, I finally settled on the refurb Vizio. We have had it for a month hooked up to regular satellite reception, so I have not yet called to connect to HDTV, but the picture is Great! It was easy to hookup...came with excellent directions and the picture quality has exceeded my expectations. I can't wait for our Super Bowl party!

Strengths: Size, ease of use, picture quality, number of inputs.
Weaknesses: non illuminated remote, speaker are not detachable.
Summary: amazing picture quality, and this is my 4th HD TV so I am no newbie. More features than my friends Panasonic 50" plasma, and the picture is NEARLY as good. The difference is he paid more than $2000 more for his. I had so much money left over I bought the Vixio 42" plasma for bedroom, and still paid less for the 2 TV's than my friend paid for his one Panasonic. Picture in picture, side by side, HDMI input, you name it, the thing has it all. Do noy hesitate, this TV rocks!

Strengths: Excellent picture quality, specially sports in HDTV. Looks specially good with 1080i and an upcoverting DVD player.
Weaknesses: The fan is a little noisy. While there are no major flaws, the blacks seem a little weak. Another problem is that the Tv gets hot after an hour of use.
Summary: While I am sure there are better plasma tv's out there for a higher price, this tv fits in well with a budget minded consumer. It certainly gives you a bang for your buck. I would make sure and add an extended warranty on it though.
