Strengths: Compatability, speed, versatility, reliability, PRICE
Weaknesses: NEC support site, Burn rate calculation (not a problem, just slightly annoying)
Summary: This is my 4rth DVD recorder, second DVD/CD combo recorder, second NEC
I have encountered NO significant problems with this unit. Physical installation was typically easy and fast for a 5 1/4 drive, Win98SE required no updating or driver installation and NERO 6 Ultra recognized and ran the drive with no problems/no updates required. I have used both the CDR and DVDR features, using various speed and brand media with no problems or errors.
My previous NEC DVDR/CDR (1300A)seemed to have a problem with the VIA chipset on my motherboard (Soyo KT7 +) and would not record CDRs. NECs web support was difficult and not very helpful. 3rd party user sites were more helpful, and verified that the problem was not uncommon. As such I was wary about buying another NEC, however this unit has performed flawlessly, requiring no efforts to find support.
The single flaw that I have noted is that the burn rate calculation (time remaining) seems to be innaccurate, but whether this is a flaw related to the drive, or the software (Nero), I cannot say. None the less, it is worth noting.
Of the 4 DVD recorders I have owned, this unit has been the superior, by far. I have no reservations in recommending its purchase

Strengths: Very reliable and very fast burner for both CD-R and DVD-R. highly recommend
Weaknesses: none that i have noticed...only that there could have been more bubble wrap :)
Summary: haven't tried out the dual layer capability yet since they are hard to come by, but the install was very easy for xp home even though no software or instructions were included. It's worth it for an OEM purchase. Tried ridata DVD+R and worked fine.

Strengths: Software compatibility. Good CD and DVD burning speeds. Dual format support. Hope of dual-layer support. Easy setup after installation. Driver support in WinXP. Great price.
Weaknesses: OEM - lack of documentation/software. Can't be sure if dual layer really works- no media with which to test.
Summary: This drive is a great bargain. Though there is no guarantee that the dual-layer technology will work with the media when it comes out, the price is too great to resist taking the gamble. Most dual format DVD burners of the same speed are right around the same price, if not a little pricier anyway.
Setup couldn't have been easier. It was a matter of the standard mounting and connecting power and IDE. After starting up my machine, Windows XP recognized the drive with no trouble and I was ready to burn.
(I bought the OEM model - there is no documentation or bundled drivers/software. I had to get software elsewhere. If you need the sofware/documentation, don't buy OEM).
The drive works nice and quick with +R and -R media (as well as with CD-R and -RW), so dual-format support seems to be OK. The drive has lived up to expectations so far, and I hope that it will live up to the dual-layer hype.
I would recommend this drive to anyone looking for a reasonably priced DVD burner. It definitely comes at a great price (especially OEM), and does everything you'd want a DVD burner to do. In addition, it promises alot for the future. We'll see about that...

Strengths: Multiple format media including dual-layer, price and speed
Weaknesses: Doesn't work with Nero 5.5 - am waiting for upgrade to Version 6 to arrive. Also, NEC does not even have this drive listed on their site, so NO manufacturer support for this drive....
Summary: The drive worked perfectly with Intervideo WinDVD Creator 2, but when I tried to burn a CD using Nero 5.5, nada - Nero 5.5 does not recognize this drive and latest .cfg file from Nero did not solve. I have ordered an upgrade to Nero 6 and am hoping that will solve the problem - if not, I'll be stuck with using this drive strictly for DVD burning from video conversions...

Strengths: Media compatibility, burn speed, burn accuracy, quality of product, and it's quiet! :D
Weaknesses: Only able to get it OEM in the US(no documentation, software,ect...); book-typing is not supported officialy
Summary: This is my second brand of DVD burner, though I had 3 of the first brand due to them continually failing. This drive is the best on the market IMHO. The quality of the burns are outstanding, they play in every set-top box I and my friends have tried them in.
As stated above, the only downside is the fact that there is no installation doc's, thoiugh you shouldn't have any problems, and the company doen't support book-typing. There are other F/W available that will allow this, just do a Google for it.

Strengths: Best value for the features on the market.
Weaknesses: It is OEM, so if you have never put in a new drive before... you might want to get a retail version.
Summary: It is a GREAT value for the money, compare it to SONY for basically the SAME DRIVE and find it would be TWICE as much! Feature for feature, this is an incredible deal. Once the dual-layer discs become readily available, it will be VERY nice to try that out as well.

Strengths: Ease of setup, speed, dual format, double-layer support
Weaknesses: Lack of documentation (I bought OEM version - no disc, no printed documentation)
Summary: Setup for this drive was a snap under Windows XP. The drivers are supported within XP itself (if you are current). I have used the drives with Pinnacle and DVDXCopy SW and have been pleased with the speed and integrity of the drives. I have burned 25 DVDs with them and have had flawless performance (no coasters) and, compared to the price of other double layer drives (Sony) is less than half the price. I have not yet burned double layer due to the scarcity/price of the media.
The 2510As (I bought 2) were a replacement for my previous HP 100i and NEC 1100A drives. They are quieter and based upon my timings for burns between 2x - 3x faster than previous burns with the NEC1100A (2.4x drive) and supports far more media manufacturers. So far I have burned Ritek, Optimum, and HP +R discs. I have not tried -R because I do not have any supply yet.
I am completely satisfied so far and would recommend purchase. I am looking forward to starting double layer burning when media becomes more available.

Strengths: installed easily, good price, great value!
Weaknesses: lack of software, drivers if needed, and instrucition manual. however, that is to be expected with OEM versions.
Summary: great DVD burner and with the new Dual Layer burning technology! I will get much use out of this. Comes with Roxio Media Creator 7. I would rather have Nero, but this is the next best thing.

Strengths: Great price, double layer
Weaknesses: none
Summary: The NEC ND-2510A DVD±RW Writer works great at a very low cost. I am only using the 4x media now and can't wait to try the 8x and eventually the dual layer. This burner is well worth the money.

Strengths: 8x DVD+/-R, 4x DVD+/-RW, 32x CD-R, 16x CD-RW, Dual Layer DVDs too!
Weaknesses: Honestly cannot think of any other than DL media is costly at the moment.
Summary: This is a great drive. The only reason I did not give it five stars (ie "One of the best") is because this is my first DVD recordable drive, thus I have no other experiences to compare with. Otherwise, it is definitely a five star product.
I have burned quite a few DVDs in the past few days on RiDATA 4x DVD+R media (Cheap!) at 6x. They play perfectly in my Cyberhome (CH-DVD300 - Cheap!) player. No Coasters.
A wonderful product! In fact, I have already convinced a co-worker to purchase one also.

Strengths: Fast, versatile, no coasters
Weaknesses: none so far
Summary: I have a Shuttle XPC so I only have one 5.25 slot so the drive I get must be multipurpose. This NEC 2510A is the one for me. It is fast and quiet. I love the fact that I can but all types of CD's and DVD's with this one drive. I haven't yet burned any dual layer media because they are too expensive. It is funny that the drive is so affordable and yet the media is not. When dual layer media get as affordable as this drive I will start using it. I'll update my review at that time. For now I'm using the single layer DVD's. NewEgg was nice enough to send 5 DVD-R as a customer appreciation gift along with the purchase. Thanks pricegrabber for helping me find the best price!
