Microsoft Streets and Trips 2007 awaits improvement but comes with a decent GPS receiver
Strengths: i500 better signal receiver than i360
Weaknesses: No auto re-reroute, voice prompt not precise enough, and more
Summary: 2006-11-12 22:11:11 (reomved extra space and linebreaks.) Let me start with the cons. The voice prompts of the software do not give the name of streets to turn to; sometime you wonder whether you've made the correct turn. It'd be very inconvenient that you have to check the map everytime you turn. There is also no auto re-route function in the software; however, you can hit F3 to force routing. There are other features (existent in other softwares) that will also improve the program, such as options to route the trip according to fastest, shortest, or no highway, and the bird-view maps. I have heard complaints that Microsoft Streets and Trips 2007 has less accurate maps than 2006, but for my own purposes, the maps are quite accurate so far.
One of my friend recently got a Garmin USB GPS receiver. I was curios to see how it would work. But it seemed that MST2007 couldn't find the receiver, even though I successfully installed the driver. I suspect that MST2007 only uses COM ports whereas this Garmin thing is a USB and cannot be configured to a COM port. If anyone else has a solution, I'd like to know that.
The only one good thing I'll say about MST2007 is that the GPS receiver Pharos i500 it comes with is much better than i360 in MST2006. I attached the receiver to my laptop and the receiving end to my window. Surprisingly, it picked up and locked the singal from satellites within several minutes and showed correct location of my apartment. Out of curiosity, I replaced the receiver by i360, it also locked the signal after several minutes, but the location was off by 3 blocks!
Overall, the software has a lot of room to improve but the receiver that comes with it is quite decent.
