Disappointed
Strengths: Makes formatting screenplays and exporting to other formats easy
Weaknesses: klunky, poorly designed user interface
Summary: I've been writing screenplays for twelve years; for the first ten, I used MS Word with templates that I wrote myself. When I switched to Movie Magic two years ago, after trying the trial versions of both it and Final Draft, at first I loved its ease of formatting, but after a while its klunky, poorly designed user interface began to wear on me, as did the clumsily implemented word processing features.
I tried writing my novel using Movie Magic's template for novel writing, but I found it completely useless, and I ended up using MS Word instead.
Recently I switched from Movie Magic to Sophocles, a screenwriting program that I wish was listed on Pricegrabber so I could give it the glowing review it deserves.
It you're a person who feels more comfortable with an established product, or if you need format compatibility with a studio, then get Movie Magic or Final Draft, whichever works for you. If you want a clean, uncluttered user interface that allows you to write without spending a lot of time learning the software and a studio isn't requiring you to submit in Movie Magic or Final Draft format, then try Sophocles.
