Strengths: excellent price point into high def
Weaknesses: must upgrade firmware to get latest audio
Summary: this is a great high definition dvd player for the money--720p and 1080i; you can get dolby true hd uncompressed sound over the 5.1 analog outputs by updating the firmware to version 2.0; also, checkout avsforum for info on firmware 2.1

Strengths: Great Picture, Great Sound, Great Price
Weaknesses: None
Summary: I don't know much about all the terminology and things. I have a 42" plasma and when I saw this particular player on sale, I snatched it up, eager to see what the Hi-Def buzz was all about. (I'd seen it for a few minutes here or there in stores and such...but I wanted to see in my own living room, with lights off, with a movie I enjoy.) I already owned an upconverting player, so I had HDMI cable already.

Well, setup was no problem at all (other than the usual joy of sorting through cables and plugs in the back of my system). It worked right away, and I slapped KING KONG on the player and sure enough, I was suitably astounded! It looked awesome. Now I know I'm only getting 1080i instead of 1080p. Oh well...to me it look pretty darn good.

I also really saw a difference with standard DVDs as well. My old upconvert only made a small difference to my eyes (barely worth the cost), but I absolutely see a differene with standard DVDs on the Toshiba HD-A2. Not the same as true HD, obviously...don't get the idea that this box works flat our miracles! But nicer. And since I have about 800 standard DVDs, I will certainly enjoy the better quality for years to come.
