Summary: This is the best All-In-One machine I've used. Easily beats my other machines in almost all aspects. Printing is crisp, scanning is sharp, fax is very fast. Highly recommended.

Strengths: Clear copies; relatively fast copy/print speed; ease of use

Summary: 2004-10-31 00:30:24 The MFC-8840D is an excellent all-in-one printer/fax/copier/scanner. Since I already have a decent laser printer (the HP 1200), I primarily purchased this machine to function as a copier, fax and color scanner -- and pretty much in that order. (My old fax was a thermal machine, which obviously was a pain in the rear -- time to enter the 21st Century!) I don't get zillions of faxes, so the machine won't get overworked in that regard.
Am pleased so far with the faxing capabilities, as well as the scanning (the machine also will not be overworked as far as scanning duties). The 21 cpm speed of the copier is great for my needs, and a good value for the cost paid. It beats the comparable Sharp all-in-one machine in performance speed, and was priced less than the Sharp to boot.
So far, so good. This is a multi-feature product at a competetive price, although you will want to shop around to get the BEST price. Final mention should be made of the built-in duplex (2-sided) printing. Haven't used it that much, and though it obviously slows down a bit when utilizing that feature, it's a great option to have.

Strengths: GREAT value: FAST all in one machine (printer,fax,color scaner,copier), USB 2.0, hefty bypass tray, clean lcd/button display.
Weaknesses: Copy lid is not detachable, due to the integration with the ADF (Auto Document Feeder). Small price to pay for the overall value.
Summary: Bought this to replace my other Brother MFC-9700; only wish the current one had the detachable copy lid like the old 9700.
FAST printing from a cold start. I haven't timed it, but it is probably w/in 10 seconds. The manufacture rates the print speed at 21ppm (single sided obviously).
The copy function is almost as fast. It takes a few seconds longer from a cold start as the scanner lamp has to warm up.
The duplex printing is GREAT. I use this feature if I'm printing something that has a lot of pages.
The printer memory is supposedly upgradable from the standard 32MB to 160MB using industry standard 100-pin DIMM. I doub't I will be upgrading the memory for my simple needs.
A good machine. Only wish it was a color laser. Perhaps next year Brother will come out with a color laser MFC.

Strengths: Fast Scanning thru ADF, quick time from scan-click to scan complete, fast printing at good quality. Separate toner and drum for decreased re-useable costs (unlike all hp machines)
Weaknesses: Slow on keypad input (type in a fax number too fast and it will sometimes miss numbers), navigating menus has a delay between button press and movement in menu. Takes up a bit of space on the desktop
Summary: This is a good all-in-one machine. The front was improved over the 8440 model. Previously, the manual feed tray was poor (only about 3" of tray to support the paper on the 8440). Now, it's a 3-part fold out that support the paper well. The front panel to change the toner opens smoother as well on this model.
The size is big, but no bigger than is necessary to have an 8.5"x11" flatbed scanning area (not including a dedicated 1" scanning area for the ADF).
Attaching the ADF paper support tray is a little tricky (always worried that the tabs that hold it in place aren't going to break off - but haven't had one break yet).
Software support is good with the brother. Able to setup WIA or Twain scanning for acquiring pictures. 3 modes in twain that is saved thru scan sessions. Choose picture, web, or Black and white scans, set dpi, paper size, and a couple other options with each mode. Probably 2-4 second scans on b+w 200dpi thru the adf feeder. Comes with software to modify all machine settings thru software (nice for setting up speed dials etc). Paperport 9 SE for document management.
Great all-in-one solution for a small office.

Strengths: It is fast and easy to use.
Quality of print is good.
Two sided printing is excellent and fast.
I think the toner cartridge gives more and copies and is cheaper than other brands like Sharp.
Weaknesses: So far I don't know of any except it does take up a lot of space.
Summary: This is a great machine and worth the money. The two sided printing feature works well and has been very useful for me.
The quality of print is good and the machine is fast.
I would buy it again.

Strengths: Fast, sturdy and quite.
Weaknesses: none
Summary: This is a great business machine for daily use. It helps to print out rebate forms and make copies of barcodes easily. Now I can mail the rebate form in a shorter time. The copy speed is amazing, much fast than my old officejet inkjet printer. Just place the document and hit the button, you get the copy in 8 seconds! Big LCD screen, it feels very comfortable.

Strengths: Easy button for all function, Very fast copier and Scanner, Easy to connect to PC.
Weaknesses: N/A
Summary: I like all the function that it has on this printer. It also has the faxing ability. It's the best copier, scanner, printer and faxer machine for me. Easy to connect with USB port to the PC. Excellent Product!!!
