Lockups a problem
Strengths: Metal case & nice looking
Weaknesses: Lockups
Summary: I bought 8 of these and have had failures and lockups on most of them. Usually unplugging it for 30 seconds will get it operational, but it should not lock up in the first place. If it were only 1 having a problem, it could be a bad unit, but all of them is an engineering problem. Even one of the replacements lock up.
Replacement with Linksys is a real pain. They do everything possible to keep you from returning the product. Long hold times then once the support person agrees that a return is needed, you must fill out a form and submit it.. over and over until they finally give you an RMA. I have loved Linksys products over the years, but this is one to avoid.

Strengths: Small and fast
Weaknesses: ??? haven't found any yet
Summary: This is a very good switch and is doing a fine job. I have just purchased 2 more. I do NOT consider the fan to be noisy, actually haven't even noticed it. NO uplink cable is needed and I found the directions to be adequate, but totally unnecessary - just plug it in.

DO NOT BUY LINKSYS BRAND!
Strengths: Keeps economy going by forcing new purchases!
Weaknesses: High failure rate within 12-24 months. Some fail within weeks.
Summary: They start dropping data packets a few months into service and eventually fail completely. You will chase network errors for months trying to understand what is happening. I have added a picture of ten 5 and 8 port Gigabit switches that I have replaced in recent weeks. I threw away several times what is in the picture. I have used Linksys for over 7 years but never again! I now use Netgear Gigabit switches and D-Link DI-655 Gigabit Router with Wireless. Cisco killed Linksys! Don't let them kill you too!

Strengths: NA
Weaknesses: NA
Summary: This is a good switch. It's too bad the above review didn't realize that no crossover cable is needed. Most new switches and all (AFAIK) gigabit switches have autodetect ports that work with straight- or crossover cables automatically.

Strengths: Does the job okay.
Weaknesses: Unbelievably noisy fan.
Summary: Unbelievably noisy fan. A small, desktop switch should not need ANY fan. This unit has a fan which is noisier than any full-height tower PC that I've owned! What were their engineers thinking of??
Furthermore, the instructions are horrific. There is no "uplink" button and they leave you to your own devices that you have to use a crossover cable (NOT supplied) if you want to hook it up to your DSL router.

Great but does not last too long
Strengths: Great speed
Weaknesses: Overheating shortens its life
Summary: I had this unit for over 3 years and as long as it worked it was great. I used it within a home office network with mixed 100 and 1Gbps connections. Computers running on 1Gbps they really transferred files at this speed (some do not understand that in some cases computers are not able to transfer at such a speed). In spite of some reviews, I do not think this unit has any fan inside, at least I don't hear or see any and I was quite wondering but it does get warm (I would not say hot). Using it 24/7 with 4 computers connected all the time plus the router it lasted 3 years. What bothered me was how it died because it was not a suddened death so until I understood what happens I bought 2 network cards. In other words, some connections died completely while others were still running at 10Mbs. I am not sure how to rate this product because as long as it worked it was great but eventually dies. From what I saw in other products reviews, nobody expects such a switch to last more than 2-3 years.

1000 only for a while
Strengths: uh, lights?
Weaknesses: lost the Gig-E functionality early
Summary: Don't buy this if you're counting on having 1000 megabit for very long. If Gig-E doesn't mean anything to you, you probably wouldn't be looking at this product anyway.
