Strengths: Excellent Scanner, Fast Printer, Great Fax.
Weaknesses: Somewhat noisy. Lights in room flicker when printer is running.
Summary: 2005-04-30 12:03:11 I did a lot of research before I purchased this all-in-one machine for my small home office. I was surprised at the speed of the scanner. I was able to scan a 70 page document in about 4 minutes on the black and white lower resolution setting. The document feeder is excellent and will hold around 45 to 50 pages without a single misfeed. The print quality is great and Brother includes a nice printer driver with some advanced options. Faxing is easy and fast. There is also a nice feature that allows faxing directly from you PC. This is very helpful in saving on toner. I have only used the copier function once and had no problems.

The printer is a little noisy while running and a bit of a power hog. But, if your looking for a very nice quality and efficient machine, I would highly recommend this printer.

Strengths: Very efficient (low cost per page), Quick, Built tough, good print quality.
Weaknesses: Uses a lot of power at the moment it starts - enough to sometimes kick my computer off the 15A residential circuit it is on. However, I like the printer so much that I'm running its own 20A circuit.
Summary: I upgraded from a more expensive HP unit that was constantly acting up, jammed, or broke. This printer is quick, rapidly printing, scanning and faxing documents. The print quality is amongst the best and it even does well on B&w images. The sheet feeder on the front works well with envelopes and labels and the 250 page bottom tray is adequate for home office use. It has enough memory and the USB 2 connection works well enough that you can multi-task without problems, like faxing one document while printing another.

My favorite feature is the cost, less than $0.02 per page. Now I no longer have to go to Kinkos.

The only caveat is to have abundant power. The rapid start up creates a high power draw, particularly if the printer and the scanner fire up at the same instant. I needed a 20Amp circuit to my home office anyway and now I have one.

If you have a home network, Windows can use your other computer (the one connected to the MFC 8440) as a print server. This acutally works better than the Network Interface Card add on since you can use the MFC-8440's scanner and fax from any computer on the network.

Strengths: GREAT price from Staples: FAST all in one machine, USB 2.0, clean lcd/button display
Weaknesses: none so far
Summary: The MFC-8440 is an excellent all-in-one printer/fax/copier/scanner. I got it at very nice price after rebate, it is much better than my previous laser printer (the HP 1200). The size is big, but no bigger than is necessary to have an 8.5"x11" flatbed scanning area. recommend to buy it

Strengths: Price is extremely good compared to my previous HP brand 4-in-1. Based on the recommendation of others, where Brothers come much better than the rest is the price of replacement cartridges.
Weaknesses: None for the printers. I used Brothers typewriter and Brothers P-touch. Both products were good.
Summary: I have made many comparisons and Brothers machines are best in value. I had toughest time with HP 4-in-1 printer. I wasted a lot of money on buying HP's inkjet cartridges and those ink cartridges are very expensive. Nowaday, I can buy laser toner replacement about $30. I am extremely happy with this product (Brother MFC 8440) so far. (Bought almost a month)

Summary: I purchased the 8440 to replace an aged HP 5L printer. I really like the copy, scan and facsimile options. The only negative I find with the 8440 is the fact that I can't run card stock through it. I print several postcards and am disappointed that the 8440 will not accomodate this type job. (I have to drag out the old HP 5L to run these.) Had I known that the 8440 would not run card stock, I probably would have sought an alternative printer/copier/fax.

Otherwise, I'm very happy with the 8440.

Strengths: Solid and well constructed
Weaknesses: Big Footprint
Summary: This is a real office level machine. It's rugged and it seems to do most everything. It's not small so you've got to have room for it. Remember, one bit disadvantage of a multi function machine is if one function breaks you still lose the whole machine when you send it out for repairs. But, having a built in laser printer and copier is a great backup for an office.
