Strengths: Very efficient (low cost per page), Quick, Built tough, good print quality.
Weaknesses: Uses a lot of power at the moment it starts - enough to sometimes kick my computer off the 15A residential circuit it is on. However, I like the printer so much that I'm running its own 20A circuit.
Summary: I upgraded from a more expensive HP unit that was constantly acting up, jammed, or broke. This printer is quick, rapidly printing, scanning and faxing documents. The print quality is amongst the best and it even does well on B&w images. The sheet feeder on the front works well with envelopes and labels and the 250 page bottom tray is adequate for home office use. It has enough memory and the USB 2 connection works well enough that you can multi-task without problems, like faxing one document while printing another.
My favorite feature is the cost, less than $0.02 per page. Now I no longer have to go to Kinkos.
The only caveat is to have abundant power. The rapid start up creates a high power draw, particularly if the printer and the scanner fire up at the same instant. I needed a 20Amp circuit to my home office anyway and now I have one.
If you have a home network, Windows can use your other computer (the one connected to the MFC 8440) as a print server. This acutally works better than the Network Interface Card add on since you can use the MFC-8440's scanner and fax from any computer on the network.
